o Embattled Uber CEO Travis Kalanick Takes Leave of Absence

San Francisco -- Uber CEO Travis Kalanick announced Tuesday he will take a leave of absence following several months of heavy scrutiny about workplace culture at the San Francisco-based rideshare giant. He did not specify a timeframe, writing in an email to employees that the absence "may be shorter or longer than we might expect." Day-to-day operations will be handled by others, with Kalanick only stepping in to assist with major decisions. The news comes just weeks after Kalanick's mother was killed in a boating accident, which also seriously injured his father. But it also follows the release of an internal report authored by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder recommending several changes amidst allegations of sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation toward employees. Chief among those recommendations, which the company's board has pledged to adopt, is that "some of the responsibilities that Mr. Kalanick has historically possessed should be shared or given outright to other members of senior management." Kalanick said he will use some of the time away to reflect on his management style. "If we are going to work on Uber 2.0, I also need to work on Travis 2.0 to become the leader that this company needs and that you deserve," wrote Kalanick. The entire email to employees is available on TechCrunch through the bottom link below.

o Mountain View-Based NowRx Lands $2 Million in Seed Funding

Mountain View, Calif. -- NowRx, the Mountain View-based operator of a mobile app pharmacy service that provides free same-day delivery of prescriptions to consumers, said it has raised $2 million in a new round of seed funding, Identities of the investors were not disclosed. The company's app lets customers upload photos of paper prescriptions, pay their regular insurance co-pay, consult with a pharmacist through video chat and schedule delivery of medications. Customers with urgent needs also have the option of paying $5 for one-hour delivery. "The large chain pharmacies are reluctant to offer free delivery because of the essential incentive to attract customers into their brick and mortar locations so they can upsell them on all of the other products in the store," said CEO Cary Breese. "By operating inside highly automated, low-overhead warehouse locations, NowRx will be able to achieve the same or better operating margins as the largest players in the industry." The company, in fact, said it expects to become profitable later this year, and plans to further streamline its operations by deploying automated robotics to dispense prescriptions. NowRx currently serves customers across the San Francisco peninsula, with plans to expand into two new warehouse locations in the Bay Area. Future plans include expansion into other markets across California and nationwide.

o South San Francisco-Based Plenty Acquires Bright Agrotech

South San Francisco -- Plenty, a South San Francisco-based developer of indoor vertical farms that combine agriculture and crop science with machine learning, IoT, big data and sophisticated environmental controls, said on Tuesday it has acquired Wyoming-based Bright Agrotech, a developer of vertical farming production system technology. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Plenty said the acquisition will help it to realize its plans to build field-scale indoor farms around the world. The company plans to bring local produce to communities everywhere by using 1% of the water, less than 1% of the land, and none of the pesticides, synthetic fertilizers or GMOs of conventional agriculture. The addition of Bright will help that effort. Bright has partnered with small farmers for more than seven years to start and grow indoor farms, providing high-tech growing systems and controls, workflow design, education and software.
