o Menlo Park-Based Earlens Lands $73 Million in Third Round of Funding

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Earlens, a Menlo Park-based developer of hearing aid technology, said on Monday it has raised $73 million in its third round of funding, led by Vertex Healthcare, and also established a structured debt facility of up to $45 million with CRG. Cochlear, CRG, RK Mellon, Windham Venture Partners and Sightline Partners also took part in the funding round, along with previous backers New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Aisling Capital, Lightstone Ventures and Medtronic. The company said it will use proceeds to expand the commercialization of its Light Driven Hearing Aid, which uses focused light and a small lens resting on the eardrum to deliver more natural sound and a greater frequency range than traditional hearing aids. Earlens said the technology also eliminates the major source of whistling in conventional hearing aids. "We believe this technology can dramatically transform the way hearing impairment is addressed," said Luke Duster, managing director at CRG. "This financing will help Earlens expand its commercial operations while enhancing its product pipeline."

o San Francisco-Based Kenzen Raises $5 Million for Smart Wearables

San Francisco -- Kenzen, a San Francisco-based developer of wearable patches that analyze sweat to continuously monitor, predict and prevent avoidable health conditions, said on Monday it has raised $5 million in a new round of funding. Investors included Digitalis, Flex (formerly Flextronics), the San Francisco 49ers, Hickory Ventures, Gaingels and the Women's Capital Connection. The company said it will use the proceeds to further develop and market its ECHO Smart Patches, which analyze sweat to measure vital signs and motion sensors to predict and prevent avoidable injuries and illnesses. The patches work in tandem with mobile apps and proprietary algorithms. "We are marrying connected wearables with fluidics analysis to deliver real-time precision medicine to healthcare communities," said co-founder and CEO Sonia Sousa.

o San Mateo-Based TrapX Security Announces New Funding and CEO

San Mateo, Calif. -- TrapX Security, a San Mateo-based developer of deception-based cyber security defense tools, said on Monday it has raised an unspecified sum in a new round of funding and named Eran Barkat, the company's former CEO and current board member, as its new CEO. Several previous backers, including Strategic Cyber Ventures, took part in the round. o CompTIA: Confidence of IT Executives Slips in Q2, Rebound Expected

Downers Grove, Ill. -- The confidence of IT industry executives fell slightly in the second quarter, but nonetheless remained on solid footing, according to CompTIA's newly released IT Industry Business Confidence Index. The index is based on an online survey of executives at 239 U.S. technology companies. Overall, the index fell to 64.2 on a 100-point scale, down 4 points from the record-setting high of 68.2 last quarter. "For the 14th consecutive quarter the aggregate rating came in above the 60-point threshold," said Tim Herbert, the senior vice president of research and market intelligence at CompTIA. "The confidence level… reflects the continued strength of the IT sector, as well as a steadily improving economy." Industry executives expect a rebound in the third quarter, with the Index projected to climb to 66.6.
