o San Francisco-Based AutoLotto Raises $17 Million in First Round of Funding

San Francisco -- AutoLotto, the San Francisco-based developer of a mobile lottery app that lets users instantly play Powerball and get lottery results on their phones, said on Monday it has raised $17 million in its first round of funding. Investors in the company, which now has raised $19 million since its inception, include angel Jason Port, venture capitalists Bruce Gibney and Ben Narasin, Causecast CEO Ryan Scott and Aurum Partners. AutoLotto also announced partnerships with iHeartMedia and Gatehouse Media, which have each invested and contributed media assets. The company said it will use the proceeds to grow and expand its mobile app, which it hopes to store and international lotteries on the coming months. "We're attracting a new generation of lottery players, capturing an entirely new market while advancing the industry," said CEO Tony DiMatteo. "This round of funding will allow us to scale our team and further expand our footprint in the U.S. and abroad."

o S.F.-Based Thoma Bravo Acquires Lexmark's Enterprise Software Business

San Francisco -- Thoma Bravo, the San Francisco-based private equity firm, said on Monday it has acquired Lexmark International's enterprise software business, which includes Kofax, ReadSoft and Perceptive. Financial terms of the deal, first announced in May, were not disclosed. Thoma Bravo said it has combined Kofax and ReadSoft to create a single, newly independent company under the Kofax brand, led by Reynolds Bish, previously the president of Lexmark Enterprise Software. Kofax's offerings include TotalAgility, Kapow robotic process automation and ReadSoft Process Director for financial process automation products. "Kofax and ReadSoft have become market-leading providers of software to simplify the initial information-intensive transactions for businesses and organizations," said Chip Virnig, a principal at Thoma Bravo. "We look forward to partnering with Kofax's current management team to strengthen and support the company's… process automation software offerings." Lexmark's Perceptive business is now part of Hyland Software, a Thoma Bravo portfolio company that develops enterprise information software.

o
Eight Tech Giants Form Organization Aimed at Stopping Patent Abuse

Washington, DC -- Banding together in a bid to fight patent trolls, eight large technology companies on Monday formed a new organization called the High Tech Inventors Alliance (HTIA). The group -- which includes Adobe, Amazon, Cisco, Dell, Google, Intel, Oracle and Salesforce -- said it plans to focus on supporting balanced patent policy. Each previously has suffered at the hands of patent trolls, smaller entities that obtain the rights to certain patents, then sue deep-pocketed companies in an effort to force large settlements or judgments. The HTIA also plans to take on other related issues, such as "baseless" patent assertions and a "crisis" in patent quality. "Collectively our members spent $62.9 billion on research and development last year and they have over 447,000 employees here in the United States," said John Thorne, the organization's general counsel and spokesperson. "When the patent system does not function well, it undermines rather than supports innovation."

o Santa Clara-Based Intel Moves Closer to Acquisition of Mobileye

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Inching closer to its $15.3 billion acquisition of Israel's Mobileye, Santa Clara-based chipmaker Intel said on Monday it has received regulatory clearance in Germany and Austria. The deal still requires approval from the Korean Fair Trade Authority, as well as at least 95% of Mobileye's outstanding shares to be validly tendered. Intel is paying $63.54 a share in cash under the offer, which is set to expire July 20, unless extended. The company said the acquisition, first announced in March, will bolster its position in the fast-growing market for autonomous vehicle systems, data and services, expected to grow to $70 billion by 2030.

o Survey: Americans Sacrificing Security for Free Wi-Fi Access

Mountain View, Calif. -- The majority of Americans are willing to sacrifice security for free Wi-Fi access, according to a new survey by Symantec. All told, 92% of those surveyed admit they have potentially put personal information at risk while using public Wi-Fi, including checking their bank accounts, yet 40% said they would feel horrified if their financial details were stolen and published online by hackers. And 73% said they aren't using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to secure their connections, even though it is considered vital for protecting personal information. "There is a deep divide between what people think is safe when it comes to using public Wi-Fi versus the reality," said Fran Rosch, the executive vice president of Symantec's consumer business unit. "What someone thinks is private on their personal device can easily be accessed by cybercriminals through unsecure Wi-Fi networks or even apps with privacy vulnerabilities." The complete report is available at the link below.
