Solar Eclipse Drove 40 Million Views to NASA TV Livestream

Bethesda, Md. -- Last week's solar eclipse drove more than 40 million views to NASA's livestream of the event, IT contractor InfoZen said on Tuesday. The feed drew record levels of livestream traffic to NASA.gov and social media channels such as Facebook, UStream, YouTube, Periscope and Twitch. NASA.gov's Eclipse Live page peaked at about 3 million simultaneous views -- several times larger than reported streaming numbers for recent Super Bowls. More than 2.6 petabytes of data were transferred within three hours, roughly equivalent to more information than is held by all academic libraries in the U.S. "Having the IT capabilities to stream our content to millions of people on NASA.gov helped us share this celestial event across the world, while also informing the public about our missions of exploration and discovery," said John Yembrick, NASA's chief of digital communications.
