o In Surprise Move, Uber Hires Expedia Head Dara Khosrowshahi as New CEO

San Francisco -- In a surprise move, embattled ride-hailing giant Uber has hired Expedia head Dara Khosrowshahi as its new CEO, according to several media reports. Khosrowshahi, who has led Expedia since its spinout from IAC in 2005, wasn't thought to be in the running, with HPE head Meg Whitman and GE head Jeff Immelt widely seen as frontrunners for the position. But according to The Washington Post, Khosrowshahi emerged over the weekend following a series of "frantic" meetings with the other two candidates. The San Francisco-based company's divided board ultimately turned to Khosrowshahi, an Iranian-American whose low-key and even-keeled personality stood in stark contrast to former CEO Travis Kalanick's. Uber's search for a new leader began in June, when Kalanick resigned following an investigation into the company's workplace culture. An internal report authored by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder recommended several changes amidst allegations of sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation toward employees.
