San Jose, Calif. -- ASUS, the Taiwanese computer, mobile phones and consumer electronics giant, said on Wednesday it has partnered with San Jose-based Fenox Venture Capital to launch a $50 million venture fund. The company said the move will give it better access to top technology startups, setting up potential collaborations. "This fund will enable us to invest in startups that will benefit from collaboration with ASUS," said Anis Uzzaman, CEO and general partner of Fenox. The new fund will focus on startups in the areas of artificial intelligence, IoT, big data, cloud, AR/VR and other related technologies that require hardware-software integration.

o San Francisco's Carrick Capital Invests $10M in New Machine Learning Startup

San Francisco -- Carrick Capital Partners, a San Francisco- and Newport Beach-based investment firm focused on technology-enabled businesses, said on Wednesday it has invested $10 million to build a new machine learning company in partnership with Lawrence Carin, Duke University's vice provost for research and professor of electrical and computer engineering. The yet-to-be-named company will focus on the services, security and healthcare industries, offering technology services in the areas of text and contracts, images and video and voice and speech. "Machine Learning is a very promising area, but there are few established market leaders that have achieved scale," said Carrick co-founder Marc McMorris. "We are excited by the opportunity to collaborate with this exceptional team to build a great company that will capitalize on a significant market opportunity." Mike Salvino, operating partner at Carrick, previously worked with Carin to deliver machine learning technology when Salvino was group CEO at Accenture Operations. Now, he will join Carin and McMorris on the company's board. Carin will serve as chief scientist.

Palo Alto, Calif. -- AeroFS, the Palo Alto-based developer a collaboration platform designed to make sharing information and ideas more intuitive and efficient, said on Wednesday it has merged with Palo Alto's Redbooth, creator of a task and project management platform for work teams. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The combined company will retain the Redbooth name and combine products and other assets. Yuri Sagalov, the co-founder and CEO of AeroFS, will lead the executive team as Redbooth's new CEO. "The AeroFS and Redbooth teams each have a long, collaborative history," said Sagalov. "We have a common target market, philosophy about combining technologies for business collaboration, a similar business model, and our products have evolved along a parallel path. With this combined outlook, we will offer a highly compelling solution for the market."

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Avi Networks, a Santa Clara-based provider of load balancing and application services, said on Wednesday it has acquired San Francisco-based StacksWare, a developer of SaaS cloud management tools. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The company said the acquisition will aid the continued development of its SaaS and managed services offerings. "Every enterprise is adopting cloud technologies, but none of that is practical without robust, automated, scalable, and easy-to-use application networking services," said Murali Basavaiah, Avi's co-founder and vice president of engineering, adding that the combination "will help us to further develop our SaaS capabilities."

San Francisco -- MrOwl, the San Francisco-based developer of a free digital Internet search and sharing platform, has named veteran investment banking executive Jim Reinhart as its chief financial officer (CFO). Reinhart most recently helped establish the U.S. Technology Investment Banking group within Ernst & Young Capital Advisors, and previously launched the San Francisco presence of Harris Williams & Co.'s technology investment banking group. MrOwl was co-founded by serial entrepreneur Arvind Raichur, who previously co-founded AttorneyLocate.com and AllLaw.com, online attorney and legal directories that built communities around legal information. The platform, available as an app and online, launched to the public in late August. Users create collections of content, then add subtopics, links, photos and documents. The collections can be made private or sharable.
