o Google to Buy Part of Smartphone Maker HTC for $1.1 Billion

Mountain View, Calif. -- Betting big on the future of smartphones, Mountain View-based Google said late Wednesday it will pay $1.1 billion in cash to acquire part of Taiwan-based HTC, its hardware partner in the smartphone market for the past decade. The deal, expected to close early next year, includes approximately 2,000 HTC employees -- many of whom already work with Google to develop the company's Pixel smartphones -- and a non-exclusive license for HTC's intellectual property. "We're excited to see what we can do together as one team," wrote Rick Osterloh, Google's senior vice president of hardware, in a blog post. "In many ways, this agreement is a testament to the decade-long history of teamwork between HTC and Google." Google previously worked with HTC to develop the first-ever Android smartphone, the HTC Dream, as well as other devices such as the Nexus One (2010), the Nexus 9 tablet (2014) and the first Pixel smartphone (2016). "This agreement is a brilliant next step in our longstanding partnership, enabling Google to supercharge their hardware business while ensuring continued innovation within our HTC smartphone and VIVE virtual reality businesses," said Cher Wang, the chairman and CEO of HTC.

o San Francisco-Based Bastille Raises $27 Million in Second Round

San Francisco -- Bastille, a San Francisco-based developer of technology designed to help security teams protect corporate airspace by scanning the entire radio frequency (RF) spectrum, said on Thursday it has raised $27 million in its second round of funding. Bessemer Venture Partners, Spinnaker VC, Comcast, Keel Funds, Ballentine Partners and individual investors took part in the round, which increases the company's total funding to $40 million since its inception in 2014. "With billions of RF and IoT connected devices already in use, enterprises face a massive security challenge," said CEO Chris Risley. "This endorsement from the investment community speaks to the need for our unique solution to help protect enterprise and federal customers from these radio-borne security threats." Bastille recently landed a contract to provide "Internet of Radios" security for the Department of Homeland Security.

o San Francisco-Based Manifold Launches After Raising $15 Million

San Francisco -- Manifold, the San Francisco- and Canada-based creator of a platform that lets developers find, buy and manage essential services without being locked into a single cloud, said on Thursday it has launched from stealth after raising $15 million in its first round of funding. OMERS Ventures, Boldstart Ventures, Version One Ventures, Amplify Partners and Leaders Fund participated. Manifold's platform is designed to let developers create stacks tailored specifically for their project needs. "Until now, there has been no easy way for developers to discover and manage the mix of services needed to create modern applications without resorting to the one-size-fits-all offerings of the monoclouds," said co-founder and CEO Jevon MacDonald. "Manifold has set out to change this, by providing a simple way for the best developers to connect with their favorite service providers." The company said it will use the funding to build out its team and expand its roster of services.

San Francisco -- ClearMetal, the San Francisco-based developer of a platform that uses machine learning to make sense of supply chain data and provide predictive visibility, said it has landed $9 million in its first round of funding, co-led by Prelude Ventures and Eric Schmidt's Innovation Endeavors. New Enterprise Associates (NEA), SAP.iO, PSA unboXed, DCLI and the founder of GT Nexus also participated in the round, which the company will use to further expand its platform. o IT and Engineering Employment Inches Up in August

Alexandria, Va. -- The number of U.S. information technology jobs inched up in August, according to new figures from the TechServe Alliance. Employment in the sector grew 0.1% sequentially to 5.3 million, and now has increased by 135,900 jobs over the past year. Similarly, engineering employment increased by 0.2% to nearly 2.6 million. "Reversing a recent downward trend line, the rate of both IT and engineering job growth increased in August," said Mark Roberts, CEO of the TechServe Alliance. "This is particularly impressive against a backdrop of more anemic job growth in the overall labor market. While a single month does not establish a trend, I am encouraged by improvement in the IT and engineering employment picture." The complete report is at the link below.
