o San Francisco-Based Realm Lands New Funding, Partners with Ericsson

San Francisco -- Realm, the San Francisco-based developer of a platform that lets users develop mobile apps with real-time features like messaging and collaboration, said it has landed a new round of funding from Ericsson Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Scale Venture Partners. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. In addition to the investment, the company will work with Ericsson to develop new types of cloud services to improve mobile apps and the network experience. "Mobile developers are under extreme pressure to build apps that provide an engaging responsive experience, whether it is for consumers or field workers," said co-founder and CEO Alexander Stigsen. "Ericsson's decision to invest in Realm is an enormous validation for our breakthrough approach to mobile data management." Realm's platform includes a real-time distributed database -- installed more than 3.5 billion times within applications such as Starbucks, SAP, eBay, Intel and Alibaba -- coupled with a "serverless" compute platform. Ericsson said the acquisition will help it further develop its "edge cloud" technology to support new, more responsive mobile experiences and new uses for the Internet of Things.

o Redwood City-Based Siris Medical Lands $4 Million in First Round

Redwood City, Calif. -- Siris Medical, the Redwood City-based developer of an artificial intelligence treatment decision support system for radiation therapy, said it has raised $4 million in its first round of funding. DigiTx Partners led the round, which also included participation from Medical Technology Venture Partners. The company said it will sue the proceeds to commercialize its QuickMatch software, which is designed to improve radiation treatment for cancer patients based on insights from past successful therapies. "There is a strong need to ensure the best treatment decision for patients diagnosed with cancer," said CEO Colin Carpenter. "This partnership will help enable Siris Medical to bring our solution to more patients and advance our objective to become the standard of care in radiation treatment decisions." David Kim, the CEO of DigiTx, and Jason Pyle, the CEO of BaseHealth, will join the company's board of directors.

o San Francisco-Based Flock Lands $3.5 Million in First Round of Funding

San Francisco -- Flock, the San Francisco-based developer of an all-in-one software platform to manage human resources, benefits, and compliance, said it has raised $3.5 million in its first round of funding, led by The Hartford. Several previous investors also took part in the round, which the company will use to accelerate market expansion and continued development of its platform. "The majority of employers in the U.S. have fewer than 500 employees and they continue to have complex, paper-intensive people processes," said founder and CEO Raj Singh. "Flock's mission is to eliminate paperwork for employers and provide real, data-backed insights on their workforce and insurance benefits." The platform supports small-to-midsize employers by connecting insurance carriers, payroll providers, applicant tracking modules and other crucial systems through the various stages of the employee lifecycle.

o FTC Settles with App That Promised Monetary Rewards for Working Out

San Francisco -- The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said on Thursday it has agreed to settle charges against the San Francisco-based operators of a mobile app that promised cash incentives to consumers who met fitness and nutrition goals, but failed to pay. The agency also alleged that Pact unfairly billed users without their consent. Users of the app made "pacts" to exercise a certain number of times a week or meet dietary goals, and agreed to be automatically charged an amount ranging from $5-$50 per missed activity. Those who met their weekly goals were supposed to receive a share of the money. In its complaint, the FTC alleges that the defendants charged tens of thousands of consumers the monetary penalty even when they met their goals or after they cancelled the service. The agency also said the defendants failed to adequately disclose how to cancel the service and stop recurring charges. "Consumers who used this app expected the defendants to pay them rewards when they achieved their health-related goals, and to charge them only when they did not," said Tom Pahl, acting director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection. "Unfortunately, even when consumers held up their end of the deal, Pact failed to make good on its promises."

o Report: 94% of U.S. School Districts Now Offer High-Speed Internet Access

San Francisco -- More than 39 million K-12 public school students in the U.S. now have access to high-speed Internet at school, up 5.1 million from a year ago, according to a new report from San Francisco-based non-profit EducationSuperHighway. The organization said that 94% of school districts nationwide now meet the minimum 100 kilobits per second (kbps) per student goal set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 2014. Still, 6.5 million students still lack high-speed access, including those at nearly 1,600 rural K-12 schools that lack adequate infrastructure. "America made a historic promise to our students in 2013 to connect every school district to high-speed Internet," said Evan Marwell, the CEO of EducationSuperHighway. "We've made great progress since then, however our work is far from over. It is critical that federal and state leaders, schools, and service providers continue the hard work necessary to close the connectivity gap." The complete report is available at the link below.

o Survey: Americans Vary in Dealing with Info and Improving Digital Skills

Washington, DC -- Americans vary greatly in the ways they deal with which online information to trust and how much they want to learn, according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center. The survey explores five broad dimensions of people's engagement with information and finds that a pair of elements stand out -- their level of trust in information sources and their interest in learning, particularly when it comes to improving their digital skills. Among the findings, roughly four-in-10 adults (38%) fall into groups that have relatively strong interest and trust in information sources and learning, while half (49%) are considered relatively disengaged and not very enthusiastic about information or digital training. Of the group most eager to engage with information, 31% are Hispanic and 21% black, while only 38% are white. "The typology suggests that engagement with information is not a one-size-fits-all proposition," said Lee Rainie, Pew's director of Internet and technology research. "In fact, Americans tend to fall on a broad scale for many different reasons. Some seek out information and new ways to consume them, while others are either too busy or too distrustful of sources to engage more fully with information or improve digital skills. Either way, it is clear that Americans consume information in ways that are as complex as they are varied." The complete report is available at the link below.
