o San Mateo-Based Brilliant Lands $21 Million in First Round of Funding

San Mateo, Calif. -- Brilliant, the San Mateo-based developer of voice and touch controls over lighting, music, climate and other smart home products, said on Wednesday it has raised $21 million in its first round of funding, led by August Capital. Miramar Ventures, The Box Group and the Stanford-StartX Fund also participated in the round, which the company will use to expand retail channels, bolster partnerships and continued to invest in research and product development. Brilliant recently expanded its headquarters in Silicon Valley and doubled the size of its R&D team. With the new funding, the company also has named former Sonos sales executive Kostas Reissis as its new vice president of sales. The Brilliant Control, which will go on sale beginning at $199 in early 2018, replaces an existing light switch to give users voice and touch control over lights, music, climate and other smart home products. Amazon Alexa is built in, as is a video intercom, mobile app control and other features. "We created the Brilliant Control so anyone can easily access any smart home product with touch or voice from anywhere in the house," said co-founder and CEO Aaron Emigh. "Ambient computing is the next big technology trend, and the home will be the battleground." David Hornik, a general partner at August, has joined the company's board of directors.

o Santa Clara-Based ShiftLeft Emerges from Stealth After Raising $9.3 Million

Santa Clara, Calif. -- ShiftLeft, a Santa Clara-based developer of application-specific cloud security tools, said on Wednesday it has emerged from stealth after raising $9.3 million in its first round of funding. Bain Capital Ventures and Mayfield co-led the round, which also included participation by individual investors. Enrique Salem, the managing director of Bain Capital Ventures, and Ursheet Parikh, a partner at Mayfield, have joined the company's board of directors. With the launch, the company announced the general availability of its security-as-a-service for cloud software. The technology is designed to understand the security needs of each version of each application, and create custom security and threat detection for it. "There is a large and important opportunity in the industry today to insert highly accurate security in the continuous integration and delivery lifecycle, without impacting an organization's pace of innovation," said CEO Manish Gupta.
