o Survey: Both Kids, Parents Having Trouble Disconnecting at Mealtime

Philadelphia -- While parents are nearly unanimous that disconnecting from devices during mealtime improves family bonding, their children are far from the only ones to blame, according to a new report by cable giant Comcast. The survey of 1,000 U.S. parents found that more than half (52%) have been told by their kids to put their device away during meals, and 42% couldn't remember the last time their family had a device-free meal. And though parents admit to taking away their children's devices an average of once a week, more than half (56%) have found their kids trying to steal them back. Nearly a third said they make their children leave their devices in a basket before bedtime, while 14% go so far as to disconnect their modems to stop Wi-Fi usage. With those figures in mind, Comcast said the "pause device" home Wi-Fi control feature has become the most popular function of its new Xfinity xFi platform.

o Study: IT Incidents Damaged the Business Reputation of 70% of Firms

San Francisco -- More than two-thirds of companies (70%) in a new survey say that a critical IT incident has harmed their reputation. The survey, conducted by analyst firm Quocirca for San Francisco-based Splunk, also found that the average organization suffers five critical IT incidents a month, with each one costing the IT department on average $36,326 and a further $105,302 to the rest of the business. "It's clear that organizations are finding it challenging to maintain end-to-end visibility with the growing volume of data being generated by their IT systems and infrastructure," said Bob Tarzey, an analyst at Quocirca. "This is holding IT teams back from being able to drill down and pinpoint the root cause of issues that are causing frequent and recurring problems. This often results in reputational damage and poor customer experience, impacting a company's bottom line." The complete study is available at the link below.
