o Mountain View-Based At-Bay Launches After Raising $6M in Seed Funding

Mountain View, Calif. -- At-Bay, a Mountain View-based provider of insurance designed to let companies innovate despite the recurrent threat of cyber risk, said on Thursday it has launched from stealth after raising $6 million in a round of seed funding, led by LightSpeed Venture Partners. Shlomo Kramer and LocalGlobe also took part in the round. The company has partnered with Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Co. (HSB) to bring to market a product aimed at defending organizations against cyber risks. "We match deep insights on a company's IT security with financial exposure that cyber attack vectors create, to enable insurance brokers and risk managers to more clearly and accurately assess and manage cyber risk," said founder and CEO Rotem Iram.

o Information Technology Job Growth Slows to a Crawl in October

Alexandria, Va. -- The growth of U.S. information technology employment continued to slow in October, according to a new report from the TechServe Alliance. The number of tech jobs grew just 0.1% last month to just over 5.3 million, while engineering employment grew 0.1% to just under 2.6 million. "Following a trend that has been in place for some time, the rate of IT job growth fell to its lowest level in years," said Mark Roberts, CEO of the TechServe Alliance. "Given that demand remains strong for IT professionals in high demand skill sets, this ongoing deceleration is attributable to an ever tightening labor supply. The current administration's restrictive immigration policies affecting highly skilled foreign nationals is making the job of finding qualified IT professionals even more difficult."

o Report: Black Friday Week to See Record Number of Cyberattacks on Retailers

San Jose, Calif. -- With online holiday shopping poised to beat in-store purchases for the first time ever this year, Black Friday week is expected to see the largest number of cyber attacks on retailers to date, according to a new report from ThreatMetrix. The company attributed its prediction to the desire of cybercriminals to test credentials stolen in recent well-publicized hacks, as well as a spike in the trading of personal identity data on the dark web. In the past 90 days alone, ThreatMetrix said it has detected 171 million attacks, a 32% increase since the beginning on this year. "Bot activity has significantly intensified in the second half of this year," said Vanita Pandey, the company's vice president of product marketing. "We predict that the top retailers will sustain heightened attacks from bot operators looking to test personal accounts. During the next week, we are expecting approximately 5-8 million daily identity testing attacks." The complete report is available at the link below.
