o San Jose-Based Aquantia Raises $59.6 Million in IPO, Stock Surges

San Jose, Calif. -- Shares of San Jose-based Aquantia spiked more than 13% by midday Friday, hours after the developer of high-speed communications chips for Ethernet connectivity raised $59.6 million in its initial public offering (IPO). The company late Thursday priced 6.8 million shares at $9 each -- below its previous forecast of $10-$12. Shares began trading Friday morning on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "AQ." Morgan Stanley, Barclays and Deutsche Bank Securities served as lead underwriters. Aquantia's Ethernet integrated circuits provide an interface between the high-speed analog signals transported over wired infrastructure and the digital information used in computing and networking equipment. The company's products are designed to alleviate network bandwidth bottlenecks caused by the exponential growth of Internet traffic.

o Mountain View-Based Synopsys to Buy Black Duck Software for $565 Million

Mountain View, Calif. -- Synopsys, the Mountain View-based developer of software for silicon chip design, verification, IP integration and application security testing, said on Friday it will pay approximately $565 million to acquire Massachusetts-based Black Duck Software, a maker of automated tools for securing and managing open source software. The deal is expected to close in December. Synopsys said the acquisition will bolster its standing in the software security market by broadening its product offering and expanding its customer reach. "Development processes continue to evolve and accelerate, and the addition of Black Duck will strengthen our ability to push security and quality testing throughout the software development lifecycle, reducing risk for our customers," said Andreas Kuehlmann, senior vice president and general manager of the Synopsys Software Integrity Group.

o San Francisco-Based Rallyteam Raises $8.6 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Rallyteam, the San Francisco-based developer of a talent development platform, said it has raised $8.6 million in its first round of funding, co-led by Norwest Venture Partners and Storm Ventures. Cornerstone OnDemand and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati also took part in the round, which the company will use to accelerate growth for its operations and platform. Rallyteam's platform is designed to help companies better understand and utilize their employees by auto-matching them to relevant jobs, projects, tasks and people. "Turnover is one of the greatest challenges facing employers today, and the lack of internal opportunities for growth and development is a major contributor," said co-founder and CEO David Somers. "Cutting-edge organizations understand the value of talented employees and are beginning to put as much effort into developing those employees as they put into recruiting them."

o South San Francisco-Based Perlara Raises $7.4 Million in New Funding

South San Francisco -- Perlara, a South San Francisco-based drug developer focused on rare diseases, said it has raised $7.4 million in a new round of funding. Investors in the round included Pivotal Capital Alpha, Al-Hamra Group, Radical Investments, Homebrew Ventures, Haystack Fund and previous backer Y Combinator. Novartis participated in the financing under the terms of its research collaboration with the company, which now has raised $9.9 million since its inception in 2014. "With this funding we will be able to advance programs forward, discover novel lead compounds for our first three PerlQuest partners, and double our disease pipeline with the launch of six new PerlQuests," said founder and CEO Ethan Perlstein.

o Owner of SFist Website Shutters Operations After Staff Votes to Unionize

San Francisco -- A week after its editorial staff voted to unionize, Gothamist, the operator of city news and culture websites including SFist, on Thursday abruptly shuttered its operations. Joe Ricketts, whose DNAinfo company acquired Gothamist earlier this year, said the decision to close both media companies came down to economics. "DNAinfo is, at the end of the day, a business, and businesses need to be economically successful if they are to endure," wrote Rickets, the founder of TD Ameritrade, in a note posted on the company's website. "And while we made important progress toward building DNAinfo into a successful business, in the end, that progress hasn't been sufficient to support the tremendous effort and expense needed to produce the type of journalism on which the company was founded." DNAinfo and Gothamist together boasted more than 500,000 email subscribers, as well as 2 million social media followers and 15 million monthly visits to its websites. The decision reportedly puts 115 staff members out of work in New York; Washington, DC; Los Angeles; Chicago; and San Francisco. The New York Times reported that Ricketts lost money every month of DNAinfo's existence, making the staff's decision to join the Writers Guild of America East the final straw. "The decision by the editorial team to unionize is simply another competitive obstacle making it harder for the business to be financially successful," a spokeswoman told The New York Times in a statement.
