o Mountain View-Based Eye-Fi Raises $20M, Forges Japanese Partnership

Mountain View, Calif. -- Eye-Fi, a Mountain View-based maker of wireless memory cards, said on Wednesday it has raised $20 million in its fourth round of funding, led by Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo. Previous backers Shasta Ventures, Opus Capital and TransLink Capital also participated. The investment by NTT Docomo is part of a larger partnership with the company, which in April will launch Eye-Fi card activation through mobile phones. The deal means that NTT Docomo's 59 million mobile subscribers will be able to share high-quality images between their digital cameras, mobile devices, online photo sites and digital photo frame, without the need for a computer. Eye-Fi said it also has expanded its executive team, adding former Skype and eBay executive Michele Don Durbin as its vice president of marketing.

New investor Coral Group led the round, which also included participation from previous backers Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Sigma Partners, Hatteras Venture Partners and Hercules. The company now has raised $50 million since its inception. o WSJ: Palo Alto-Based HP to Cut 275 Jobs in webOS Group

Palo Alto, Calif. -- HP, the Palo Alto-based technology giant, plans to cut 275 jobs in its webOS mobile software group, The Wall Street Journal reported. The news comes seven months after former CEO Leo Apotheker said the company would stop selling webOS hardware. Then, in December, current CEO Meg Whitman announced plans to make the software open source. "As webOS continues the transition from making mobile devices to open-source software, it no longer needs many of the engineering and other related positions that it required before," said HP in a statement, published by The Journal. The company reportedly will attempt to find new positions for many of the displaced workers.
