Palo Alto, Calif. -- Jiff, the Palo Alto-based developer of a HIPAA-compliant private healthcare social network and digital health apps platform, said on Monday it has raised $7.5 million in its first round of funding, led by Aeris Capital. Seed investor Aberdare Ventures also participated. The company also named healthcare technology veteran Derek Newell as its first CEO. o Reports: CNN on Verge of Deal for Social Media News Site Mashable

San Francisco -- Cable network CNN appears on the verge of acquiring popular social media news site Mashable, according to several media reports. The deal -- which would be the largest in the network's history -- is believed to be worth more than $200 million, and could be announced as soon as Tuesday, Reuters reported. Neither company has confirmed the reports. Launched by Pete Cashmore in 2005, Mashable primarily focuses on social media news, but also covers a range of other technology topics. The site, which is based in New York with offices in San Francisco, claims 20 million unique monthly visitors and 4 million social media followers. CNN last fall also acquired Zite, developer of an iPad app for personalized news content.

o White House Names Todd Park as New Federal CTO

Washington, DC -- Filling a void created by last month's departure of Aneesh Chopra, President Obama has named Todd Park as the nation's new CTO. Park since 2009 has served as CTO of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), where he was originally hired as an entrepreneur-in-residence. White at HHS, Park helped create HealthCare.gov, a site providing consumers with choices of available health insurance plans by zip code, and the Health Data Initiative, which makes vast amounts of HHS information available through Health.Data.gov. "Todd Park has demonstrated a remarkable talent for enlisting innovative technologies to modernize government, reduce waste and make government information more accessible to the public," said Obama. "In his new position he will bring those skills to the entire Federal enterprise." Chopra, who in 2009 became the nation's inaugural CTO, announced his resignation in January and reportedly is contemplating a run for Virginia lieutenant governor.
