o Santa Clara-Based Chegg Raises $25 Million in Equity Funding

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Chegg, the Santa Clara-based developer of a social education platform used by students for homework help, course selection and textbook rental, has raised $25 million in a new round of equity funding, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Seventeen unidentified investors took part in the round. The funding follows. The news follows a year of expansion for Chegg, which in 2011 added several new online services beyond its core textbook rentals following the acquisitions of Student of Fortune, Cramster and CourseRank.

o Cupertino-Based Apple to Build $304 Million Campus in Texas

Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple plans to build a new $304 million campus in Austin, Texas expected to create 3,600 new jobs, Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced on Friday. The project will more than double the size of Cupertino-based Apple's workforce in the state over the next decade, expanding its customer support, sales and accounting functions for the region. Apple, in exchange, will receive a $21 million investment over the next 10 years from the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF).

o Western Digital Completes $4.8B Deal for San Jose-Based Hitachi GST

San Jose, Calif. -- A full year after first announcing plans for the deal, Irvine-based data and media storage products maker Western Digital (WD) said on Friday it has completed its $4.8 billion acquisition of San Jose-based Viviti Technologies, formerly known as Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST). Under the deal, WD paid $3.9 billion in cash and 25 million shares of stock valued at approximately $0.9 billion. Hitachi now owns approximately 10% of WD's outstanding shares. Viviti, which develops hard disk drives, solid state drives and external storage products, will operate as a unit of WD, with Steve Milligan, its former CEO, serving as president. "The completion of this acquisition is a truly momentous event in the 42-year history of our company," said John Coyne, the CEO of WD. "The new WD is in a strong position to seize the growth opportunity in stored digital content."

o San Francisco's Virtustream Raises $15 Million in Third Round

San Francisco -- Virtustream, a Maryland-based developer of software designed to move complex IT environments to the cloud, with West Coast operations in San Francisco, said on Friday it has raised $15 million in its third round of funding, increasing its total backing to $75 million. Participants included Intel Capital, Columbia Capital, Noro-Moseley Partners and TDF, as well as new investor QuestMark Capital. The company said it will use the proceeds to further enhance its core xStream platform, as well as to expand its geographic coverage. Virtustream, which currently has other offices in New York and London, and operates four data centers worldwide, said it has expanded into China and Southeast Asia through new partnerships. The company raised $10 million in its second round, which closed last July.

o Report: Number of Worldwide Blogs Totaled 181 Million at End of 2011

New York -- There were more than 181 million blogs published worldwide at the end of 2011, up from 36 million just five years earlier, according to new research by NM Incite, a Nielsen/McKinsey company. The figure reflected all personal and professional blogs, whether or not they had been recently updated. In the U.S., the company counted 6.7 million people publishing blogs on sites such as Blogger, WordPress and Tumblr, and another 12 million who write blogs using their social networks. The firm said that women make up the majority of bloggers, and about half are aged 18-34.

Sunnyvale-based Silicor Materials, a maker of polysilicon used in solar cell production, has raised $10.6 million in a notes offering, the company revealed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The news comes as the company, formerly known as Calisolar, said earlier this week it secured a memoranda of understanding with two major partners as it moves toward construction of its large-scale manufacturing facility in Mississippi.
