Participants included new investors Atlantic Bridge Capital, SK Telecom Ventures and TransLink Capital, as well as previous backers US Venture Partners, WI Harper Group and Eric Schmidt's Innovation Endeavors. Quixey's Functional Search technology allows users to describe what they want to do in natural language, such as "find cheap gas," then finds mobile, desktop, web and browser apps that match their needs. "Millions of apps exist and thousands more are being created every day across all platforms, but people can't find apps in the moments they need them," said CEO Tomer Kagan. "Quixey is the only company that connects users with apps across all platforms." The company, which launched out of private beta in May 2011, now has raised $24.2 million since its inception. http://www.quixey.com http://www.marketwatch.com/story/quixey-closes-20-million-series-b-round-2012-06-07 _____________________________________________ o True Ventures Closes New $205 Million Early-Stage Tech Fund Palo Alto, Calif. -- True Ventures, a Palo Alto-based early-stage venture capital firm, said it has closed a new $205 million investment fund. The fund, known as True Ventures III, will continue the firm's strategy of investing smaller amounts -- often less than $2.5 million -- to support new entrants into the largest emerging technology markets, including commerce, consumer devices, infrastructure services, media, mobile and software and services. Founded in 2006, the firm now has $600 million under management, and has funded more than 100 companies, including Automattic, BrightRoll, Assistly, Typekit, Socialcast, Fitbit, Urban Airship and Puppet Labs. True Ventures, which also has offices in San Francisco, closed its previous fund in 2008. http://www.trueventures.com http://www.trueventures.com/2012/06/06/true-ventures-iii-lp-closes-at-205-million/ _____________________________________________ o LoYakk Launches Location-Based Social Networking Platform Sunnyvale, Calif. -- A social networking startup based in Sunnyvale aims to let users connect with people in specific locations, even if they know each other. The company, called LoYakk, has developed a free iPhone and Android app that enables users to have conversions with those around them, with no prior personal relationship needed. Attendees of a sporting event, for instance, could theoretically chat with other fans at the same venue. Users are allowed to maintain their anonymity, if preferred. "Friendship alone is overrated," said co-founder Salim Ali. "As social animals, we possess an inherent desire to reach out to those around us. LoYakk brings this real-life behavior into the virtual social world by connecting people with a common need at a particular point in time at a specific location." Ali (CEO) most recently served as the global vice president of marketing at SAP. Fellow co-founder Jitu Telang most recently was a senior analyst with CMT Asia, and previously held senior software development roles at IBM and Trilogy. http://www.loyakk.com _____________________________________________ o San Francisco-Based Ringadoc Lands $750,000 in Seed Funding San Francisco -- Ringadoc, a San Francisco-based virtual health startup, said on Thursday it has landed $750,000 in a round of seed funding, led by FF Angel, the seed investment vehicle of Founders Fund. Ringadoc facilitates on-demand virtual doctor visits over any phone, smartphone or computer. Licensed and verified physicians provide health advice, diagnoses and even prescriptions when warranted. The company will use the seed funding to build a new product offering for physicians to use directly in their offices, as well as for key hires. http://www.ringadoc.com http://www.marketwatch.com/story/founders-fund-backs-health-startup-ringadoc-2012-06-07 _____________________________________________ o GSA Launches Program to Transition Government to Cloud Computing Washington, DC -- The General Services Administration (GSA) late Wednesday unveiled a new program aimed at transitioning the federal government to cloud computing. The new Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program, known as FedRAMP, will standardize security assessments of cloud products and services across the government to avoid duplication and, ultimately, help agencies save money. The GSA said the program has begun accepting security certification applications from private companies. "GSA has a history of leading the government in IT innovation, going back to introducing the federal workforce to the Internet in the 1990s," said Dan Tangherlini, acting administrator of the GSA.
