The FTC alleges that Mountain View-based Google used cookies to track the activities of Safari users and send them targeted advertisements through its DoubleClick ad network. The fine would be the largest ever assessed to a company by the FTC, The Journal said. Google said the tracking was inadvertent. "The FTC is focused on a 2009 help center page," the company said in a statement. Previous backers Menlo Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners and Tenaya Capital also participated in the company's third round, which increases its total backing to $52 million. Avere said it will use the latest funding to advance the market penetration of its FXT Series Edge filers. The company said the deal strengthens its position in the fast-growing Asia-Pacific region and increases its presence in Shanghai to support growing demand from multinational customers looking to expand in China. The company gains six data centers and one disaster recovery center located across Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore. "With our increased footprint in China and growing capacity in Shanghai, we are well-positioned to meet demand from multi-national customers looking to expand in this high-growth market," said Steve Smith, the president and CEO of Equinix.
