o San Mateo-Based AlienVault Raises $22.4 Million in Third Round

San Mateo, Calif. -- AlienVault, the San Mateo-based developer of open source security information and event management software, said on Monday it has raised $22.4 million in its third round of funding, co-led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) and Sigma. Previous backers Trident Capital and Adara Venture Partners also participated in the round, which the company will use to expand sales, marketing and support functions, as well as further invest in research and development. Ted Schlein, a managing partner at KPCB, will join the company's board of directors. The new round comes just six months after the company raised $8 million in its second round, led by Trident Capital. In January, AlienVault named Barmak Meftah as its new president and CEO and Roger Thornton as its CTO.

o Microsoft Opens New Office in Sunnyvale's Moffett Towers


Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Further boosting its presence in Silicon Valley, computing giant Microsoft on Monday officially opened its new office in Sunnyvale's Moffett Towers. Microsoft said employees across its business groups will utilize the 237,000-square-foot space, including those in the Online Services Division. "The opening of the Moffett Towers office represents our commitment to Microsoft Silicon Valley as a strategic location for the company in the heart of a rich technology ecosystem and talent pool," said Qi Lu, president of the division. Microsoft has had a presence in Silicon Valley since 1981 and currently has more than 2,500 employees in the Bay Area. In addition to Moffett Towers, construction is underway at the company's Silicon Valley campus in Mountain View.

Menlo Park, Calif. -- A pair of Menlo Park-based venture capital firms, Rembrandt Venture Partners and Shasta Ventures, have co-led a new $10.5 million round of funding for Salt Lake City-based Needle, developer of a chat and voice communications platform providing e-commerce sites with real-time expert shopping assistance. The company plans to use its second round to accelerate adoption of its platform and expand its pool of brand experts and fans. Jim Barnett, a partner at Shasta Ventures, and Douglas Schrier, a partner at Rembrandt Venture Partners, will both join Needle's board of directors.

o MetrixLab Acquires S.F.-Based MarketTools Research Solutions

San Francisco -- MetrixLab, a Netherlands-based provider of online consumer research services, said on Monday it has acquired San Francisco-based MarketTools Research Solutions, a provider of software and services for market research, from owner TPG Growth. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. MetrixLab will continue to operate MarketTools under its current brand name, led by new CEO Simon Kooyman, who also serves as the CEO of MetrixLab USA. "The MarketTools offering is now extended with MetrixLab solutions for digital and cross media research and customer experience management," said Kooyman, who succeeds Scott Arnold.

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Citrix Systems, the Florida-based computing technology giant with regional headquarters in Santa Clara, said on Monday it has completed its acquisition of Santa Clara-based Bytemobile, a a developer of data and video optimization solutions for mobile network operators. Financial terms of the deal, first announced in June, were not disclosed. Citrix said the acquisition will give it a key foothold in the operator market and create a new on-ramp for its cloud networking business. Chris Koopmans, formerly the COO of Bytemobile, has been named vice president and general manager of Citrix Service Provider Platforms, which will be part of the Citrix Cloud Networking group.

Emeryville, Calif. -- LeapFrog Enterprises, the Emeryville-based developer of educational technology for children, said that Mark Etnyre will resign as its CFO to spend more time with his family and pursue personal interests. The resignation will be effective as of Oct. 1. Etnyre has been with the company since 2007 and served as its CFO since 2010. The company has not announced plans for a successor.
