Nationally, venture capitalists invested $6.7 billion in 913 deals, with investment activity rising 12% in terms of dollars and 2% in the number of deals compared with the prior quarter. The Internet-specific and biotechnology sectors saw the largest increases. "In many ways it feels like the late 1990's with information technology driving venture investment and significantly outpacing other sectors when it comes to level of activity and momentum," said Mark Heesen, president of the NVCA. "The difference, however, is where we go from here. There will be no tech bubble. IT investing will continue to be the bedrock of the venture industry -- but at sustainable levels." https://www.pwcmoneytree.com/MTPublic/ns/moneytree/filesource/displays/notice-D.html _____________________________________________ o Mountain View-Based Symantec Acquires Spain's PasswordBank Mountain View, Calif. -- Symantec, the Mountain View-based developer of Internet security software, has acquired Spain's PasswordBank, The Next Web reported, citing a story from Spanish news outlet Expansion. The company paid a reported $25 million for PasswordBank, developer of an identity-as-a-service platform that provides identity and access management, as well as single sign-on features. Symantec reportedly will retain most of the company's employees, turning its Spain offices into a research and development center. http://www.passwordbank.com/ http://thenextweb.com/insider/2013/07/18/symantec-acquires-spanish-startup-passwordbank-for-25m/ _____________________________________________ o San Francisco Ranks No. 6 on List of "Top Startup Cities -- By Cost & Taxes" San Francisco -- The San Francisco Bay Area ranks No. 7 on Entrepreneur's new list of the "Top Startup Cities -- By Cost & Taxes." The rankings, compiled by San Francisco-based tax-planning startup GoodApril, consider factors such as median tech wages, taxes, housing costs and the cost of office space. "If you were to ask your accountant where you should base your startup company, this is probably how she's respond," the publication writes. Austin tops the list, followed by Seattle, Boulder, New York, Boston and Washington, DC. http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/227436 _____________________________________________ o Survey: IT Employment to Remain Stable for Remainder of 2013 Chicago -- Information technology workers can expect a fairly stable employment environment over the next six months, along with an upswing in temporary jobs, according to a new national survey by CareerBuilder and Sologig.com. IT employers surveyed expect permanent hiring to trend down slightly, with temporary and contract hiring increasing 18%. "In the wake of the recession, IT employers continue to cautiously add permanent headcount, relying more on temporary workers to help meet their growing technological demands," said Eric Presley, the CTO of CareerBuilder. "Our data shows an encouraging increase in projected temporary positions, many of which can lead to permanent employment, as 40% of IT employers plan to transition temporary workers to full-time status." The campaign, which launched late last month, is seeking $75,000. The series, billed as "part storytelling and part startup 'how-to,'" follows the founding teams of five early-stage companies -- LedCyte, RidePost, Snobswap, TrendPo and The Trip Tribe -- as they navigate their way through the often unglamorous but potentially rewarding startup world.
