o San Francisco-Based Expect Labs Closes New Round of Funding

San Francisco -- Expect Labs, the San Francisco-based developer of an intelligent assistant platform designed to understand conversations and anticipate information a user needs, said on Monday it has raised an unspecified amount in a new round of funding. Liberty Global Ventures and IDG Ventures joined previous backers Google, Intel, Samsung and Telefónica in the round, which the company will use to extend its platform across multiple industry verticals and geographic markets. "For the past few decades, the holy grail for artificial intelligence has been to develop technologies that can understand natural conversation and respond intelligently. For the first time, these technologies look to be within reach," said founder and CEO Timothy Tuttle.

o Yahoo to Repurchase $1.16 Billion in Stock from Third Point

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Yahoo said on Monday it will spend $1.16 billion to repurchase 40 million shares currently owned by Third Point. The Sunnyvale-based company will pay $29.11 each. Following the deal, Third Point will own approximately 20 million shares, representing less than 2% of Yahoo's outstanding common stock. Each of the directors originally nominated by Third Point -- Daniel Loeb, Harry Wilson, and Michael Wolf -- have submitted their resignations from the company's board. Yahoo had previously announced plans to buy back $1.9 billion in stock. Upon completion of the latest deal, the company will have approximately $700 million remaining under the $5 billion buyback authorization announced last year.
