o San Jose-Based Cisco to Acquire Sourcefire in $2.7 Billion Deal

San Jose, Calif. -- In one of the largest recent acquisitions in the cybersecurity space, San Jose-based networking giant Cisco said on Tuesday it will buy Maryland-based Sourcefire, a developer of open source security technology, in a deal worth $2.7 billion. Under the agreement, Sourcefire shareholders will receive $76 a share in cash. The news sent shares of Sourcefire up 28% in Tuesday's trading on the Nasdaq. Sourcefire makes a variety of security products, including intrusion prevention systems, firewalls and malware protection. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2013, when Sourcefire employees will join the Cisco Security Group, led by Christopher Young. "Sourcefire aligns well with Cisco's future vision for security and supports the key pillars of our security strategy," said Hilton Romanski, Cisco's vice president of corporate development. Sourcefire was founded in 2001 by Martin Roesch, author of the open source Snort intrusion detection and prevention technology. The company, which completed its initial public offering (IPO) in 2007 and generated $223.1 million in revenue last year, has more than 650 employees.

"We believe that engaging with game-changing companies at an early stage will not only benefit Flextronics, but will provide those companies with the ability to leverage a wealth of experience in hardware design, manufacturing and logistics," said Mike McNamara, the CEO of Flextronics. The accelerator will focus on applicant companies with less than three years of product development.
