o San Francisco-Based Addvocate Raises $2 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Addvocate, the San Francisco-based developer of social media platform designed to turn employees into brand advocates, said on Wednesday it has raised $2 million in its first round of funding. Rogers Venture Partners led the round, which included participation from angel investor Karen Riley. The company also had closed an earlier seed round that included angel investors such as Cyan and Scott Banister, Jay Baer and Jesse Engle. Founded by Marcus Nelson, the former head of social media at salesforce.com, Addvocate is the developer of a cloud-based platform that helps companies coordinate social media accounts, identify internal experts and distribute content. The platform is currently being piloted by several large companies. "Companies are still struggling to figure out how social media can help them boost profit and customer satisfaction," said Nelson. “Few realize that their own employees are the best distributors of goodwill, advice and messaging -- or that many of their employees want to participate." The company also said it has hired Piers Cooper, the former vice president of strategic business development at Oracle, as its COO.

Launched in 2011 by students at the University of Southern California, MySocialCloud installs a button on users' web browsers, which they can then click on to automatically log into any website. The company was backed by investors including Virgin's Richard Branson, Insight Venture Partners' Jerry Murdock and Photobucket's Alex Welch.
