o Report: M&A Activity in the Local Digital Space Continues Strength

Chantilly, Va. -- There continues to be a large amount of M&A activity within the local digital landscape -- including mobile, social, online and audio/video -- according to a new report from BIA/Kelsey. All told, there were 144 local digital deals valued at $7.2 billion in the first half of 2013, compared with 143 at $5.2 billion during the same period last year. The online channel led the way in terms of both deal volume and value, though mobile showed the most growth, due in large part to Google's $1.3 billion acquisition of Waze. "This year has seen activity levels grow in the local digital landscape, with the value of the deals increasing from 2012 to 2013, driven in particular by a couple of significant acquisitions," said Jeanne Dixon Dattilo, senior valuation analyst at BIA/Kelsey. "From our analysis, it's clear the energy around locally targeted digital media is accelerating."

o Survey: 43% of Workers Say Their Office Has Cliques

Chicago -- Forty-three percent of employees say their office is populated by cliques, according to a new survey by CareerBuilder. While only one in 10 workers said they felt intimidated by office cliques, 20% said they've done something they're really not interested in or didn't want to do just to fit in with co-workers. Of those, 46% went to happy hours to fit in, 21% watched a particular movie or TV show to discuss at work the next day, 19% made fun of someone else or pretended not to like them and 17% pretended to like certain food. Moreover, about one in seven said they hide their political affiliation to fit in, and 9% keep their religious affiliations and beliefs a secret. "Thirteen percent of workers said the presence of office cliques has had a negative impact on their career progress," said Rosemary Haefner, the vice president of human resources at CareerBuilder. "While it's human nature to associate with peers who possess similar personality types and characteristics, cliques can be counterproductive in the workplace."
