o Reports: Uber Close to Completing Funding Round at $3-$4 Billion Valuation

San Francisco -- Uber, the San Francisco-based on-demand car service, is close to raising as much as $200 million in funding at a valuation expected to fall between $3-$4 billion, multiple media outlets reported. Private equity firm Texas Pacific Group (TPG) is said to be leading the round, which also may include Google Ventures. Sources such as TechCrunch and AllThingsD said the company is in advanced negotiations with the potential investors, and may wrap up the deal in the coming weeks. Uber, which lets clients request a car through their mobile devices, now operates in 35 cities and expects to generate $125 million in revenue this year, AllThingsD reported. The company in 2011 raised $37.5 million at a $330 million valuation from investors including Menlo Ventures, Benchmark Capital and Goldman Sachs.

o Google to Sponsor Free Wi-Fi in San Francisco Parks and Plazas

San Francisco -- Tech giant Google will sponsor a program providing free Wi-Fi at 31 San Francisco parks and plazas, the San Francisco Examiner reported Friday. The Mountain View-based company will pay for the technology with a $600,000 gift to non-profit sf.citi, a group chaired by angel investor Ron Conway. Wireless company iNet will install the equipment for the system, which could be up and running by next spring. "We wanted to create a model project that was done the right way and use it as an example of how to take free Wi-Fi across San Francisco," Supervisor Mark Farrell told The Examiner.

o Survey: Younger Workers Most Likely to Job Hunt While at the Office

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Nearly half of younger workers said they are likely to spend time searching for a new job while at the office, according to a new survey by Menlo Park-based Accountemps. Forty-eight percent of those between the ages of 18-34 indicated they would have no problem job hunting while at work, compared with just 26% of those between the ages of 35-44 and 21% of those between the ages of 45-54. "The grass isn't always greener on the other side, so professionals should first consider how they might improve their current situation before looking for a new job," said Max Messmer, the chairman of Accountemps. "When it is time to move on, conducting the job hunt using company resources is not only unethical, it places the employee at a high risk of being caught in the act."

o Web Series Startupland Surpasses Goal in Kickstarter Campaign

Washington, DC -- Startupland, a documentary web series chronicling the experiences of five tech companies as they go through an accelerator program at Fortify Ventures, on Friday wrapped up its Kickstarter campaign after surpassing its stated goal of $75,000. The campaign, which launched late last month, attracted $85,295 from 354 investors. Directed by Justin Gutwein, the series, billed as "part storytelling and part startup 'how-to,'" follows the founding teams of five early-stage companies -- LedCyte, RidePost, Snobswap, TrendPo and The Trip Tribe -- as they navigate their way through the often unglamorous but potentially rewarding startup world.
