Foster City, Calif. -- GridGain Systems, the Foster City-based developer of an in-memory computing platform designed for big data environments, said on Monday it has raised $10 million in its second round of funding, led by new investor Almaz Capital. Previous backer RTP Ventures, the U.S. arm of ru-Net Holdings, also participated. The company plans to use the new capital to expand its sales, marketing and new product development activities. Geoff Baehr, managing partner of Almaz Capital, has joined the company's board. Founded by Nikita Ivanov and Dmitriy Setrakyan, GridGain develops software for businesses needing to process big data in real-time. o Palo Alto-Based Kiwi Lands $9 Million in New Funding

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Kiwi, a Palo Alto-based developer of Android-focused mobile games, said on Monday it has landed $9 million in a new round of funding, led by Sequoia Capital. AdMob founder Omar Hamoui. Guitar Hero co-creator Charles Huang and SV Angels also participated in the round. Kiwi, founded in 2011 by Omar Siddiqui and Shvetank Jain, focuses on character-driven games for Android devices, ranging from adventure titles such as Shipwrecked and Brightwood Adventures to strategy game Enemy Lines. Siddiqui and Jain have worked together since 2007 in the mobile and social games space at Trippert Labs, Playdom and Disney. (PDF)

o Palo Alto-Based WSO2 Launches Federal Unit Near Washington

Palo Alto, Calif. -- WSO2, a Palo Alto-based developer of open source service-oriented architecture (SOA) technology, said on Monday it has launched a new federal unit based in Alexandria, Va., near Washington, DC. The unit, known as WSO2 Federal Systems, will offer the company's open source computing technology to government, intelligence, law enforcement and defense clients. Jonathan Marsh, who has served as WSO2's vice president of business development, will head the unit as CEO, with Adam Firestone serving as director of solutions. "The government sector is well positioned to leverage the SOA and cloud transformation technologies, IT strategies and lessons learned by private industry," said Marsh. "At the same time, there are challenges, requirements and processes unique to the defense and government sectors." Santa Clara, Calif. -- Santa Clara-based Silicon Valley Bank said on Monday it has provided $10 million in debt financing to San Diego-based aTyr Pharma, a developer of protein therapeutics focused on rare diseases. o CTIA Accepting Nominations for MobITS Awards in San Jose

San Jose, Calif. -- Wireless association CTIA said on Monday it is now accepting entries for its MobITS awards, which will honor the year's top mobile IT products and services. The deadline for submission is Aug. 9, with finalists announced on Sept. 12. Ten winners then will be announced at MobileCON 2013, which takes place this October at the San Jose Convention Center. (San Jose, Calif.) San Jose-based Atrenta, a developer of software used to improve design efficiency for semiconductor and consumer electronics companies, has named Doug Aitelli as its vice president of worldwide sales. Aitelli previously served as the vice president of worldwide sales and then CEO at Calypto Design Systems. 

(Sunnyvale, Calif.) Sunnyvale-based Moxie Software, a developer of social software designed to help companies connect employees, customers and partners, has named Stephen Yount as its senior vice president of global field operations. Yount previously served as the vice president of worldwide sales and marketing at WorkShare Technology.
