o Redwood Shores-Based Qwilt Lands $16 Million in Third Round

Redwood Shores, Calif. -- Qwilt, a Redwood Shores-based developer of online video delivery and caching tools, said on Tuesday it has raised $16 million in its third round of funding, led by Bessemer Venture Partners. Previous investors Accel Partners, Redpoint Ventures and Marker also contributed to the round, which increases the company's total backing to $40 million. The company said it plans to use the latest investment to expand its international sales and engineering teams. Qwilt's flagship Video Fabric Controller is designed to help network operators increase network capacity, while also improving the quality of service for customers. The technology monitors video traffic on operator networks, identifying trending and popular titles and then storing them locally at the subscriber edge, in close proximity to the end user.

o Palo Alto-Based Superfish Raises $10 Million in Fourth Round

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Superfish, the Palo Alto-based developer of an image search platform, said on Tuesday it has raised $10 million in its fourth round of funding, led by Vintage Investment Partners. Previous backers Draper Fisher Jurvetson and DFJ Tamir Fishman Ventures also participated in the round, which increased the company's total funding to $20 million since its founding in 2006. Superfish said its visual search engine can analyze an image 100% algorithmically, finding similar images in real-time without the need for text tags or human intervention. The company said it will use the latest round to launch a new product called Venn, which will blend visual search with the social graph to uncover visual patterns and common interests within the social graph. "As the social web has exploded and photos play such a large role in people's lives online, we see a huge opportunity in solving new visual search problems," said co-founder and CEO Adi Pinhas.

o AVG Technologies Names Gary Kovacs as New CEO

San Francisco -- AVG Technologies, the Dutch Internet security firm with North American headquarters in San Francisco, on Tuesday named Gary Kovacs as its CEO and managing director. Kovacs most recently served as the CEO of Mozilla, where he focused on expanding the company's desktop and mobile businesses. "His past career successes are directly applicable to the opportunity and the future of AVG -- mobile, cloud, software and platforms -- and we believe that his rare blend of experience, leadership and drive will take AVG to new levels," said Dale Fuller, the chairman of AVG's supervisory board. Kovacs earlier in his career was the senior vice president of markets, solutions and products at Sybase and general manager and vice president of mobile and devices at Adobe Systems.

o San Francisco-Based Mocana Names James Isaacs as COO

San Francisco -- Mocana, a San Francisco-based developer of mobile app security tools, on Tuesday named James Isaacs as its COO, responsible for the company's sales, marketing, business development and customer success operations. Isaacs most recently has served as an executive vice president at 41st Parameter, and previously was an Entrepreneur in Residence at Khosla Ventures. Earlier in his career, he held executive roles at companies such as Microsoft and Apple. "James' track record and field operations leadership experience will be invaluable to Mocana as it embarks on the next phase of its growth strategy," said CEO Adrian Turner.

o San Ramon-Based Trov Raises Second Round of Funding

San Ramon, Calif. -- Trov, a San Ramon-based developer of private online digital lockers that let users store and organize information about personal possessions, said on Tuesday it has closed its second round of funding, increasing the company's total backing $6.8 million. The company, which did not disclose the identities of its investors, said it will use the funds to grow its engineering team, expand its member benefits program, and build market presence. "This funding will help us raise market awareness and expand our engineering efforts," said founder and CEO Scott Walchek. Trov also announced its board of directors and advisory board, which can be viewed at the bottom link below.

o S.F.-Based SINET Partners with Mach37 Cybersecurity Accelerator

San Francisco -- The Security Innovation Network (SINET), a San Francisco-based organization focused on advancing cybersecurity innovation, said on Tuesday it has partnered with the Virginia-Based Center for Innovative Technology's newly formed March37 Cybersecurity Accelerator. As part of the deal, Rick Gordon, the managing partner of Mach37, has been named to the SINET Showcase Steering Committee, a council made up of experts from the system integration, academic, science, federal government, private industry, venture capital and investment banking communities. The committee selects 16 companies to present at the annual SINET Showcase, which will take place this December in Washington, DC.
