o Redwood Shores-Based Qwilt Lands $16 Million in Third Round

Redwood Shores, Calif. -- Qwilt, a Redwood Shores-based developer of online video delivery and caching tools, said on Tuesday it has raised $16 million in its third round of funding, led by Bessemer Venture Partners. Previous investors Accel Partners, Redpoint Ventures and Marker also contributed to the round, which increases the company's total backing to $40 million. The company said it plans to use the latest investment to expand its international sales and engineering teams. Qwilt's flagship Video Fabric Controller is designed to help network operators increase network capacity, while also improving the quality of service for customers. The technology monitors video traffic on operator networks, identifying trending and popular titles and then storing them locally at the subscriber edge, in close proximity to the end user.

o Palo Alto-Based Superfish Raises $10 Million in Fourth Round

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Superfish, the Palo Alto-based developer of an image search platform, said on Tuesday it has raised $10 million in its fourth round of funding, led by Vintage Investment Partners. Previous backers Draper Fisher Jurvetson and DFJ Tamir Fishman Ventures also participated in the round, which increased the company's total funding to $20 million since its founding in 2006. Superfish said its visual search engine can analyze an image 100% algorithmically, finding similar images in real-time without the need for text tags or human intervention. The company said it will use the latest round to launch a new product called Venn, which will blend visual search with the social graph to uncover visual patterns and common interests within the social graph. "As the social web has exploded and photos play such a large role in people's lives online, we see a huge opportunity in solving new visual search problems," said co-founder and CEO Adi Pinhas.
