Palo Alto, Calif. -- SIPX, the Palo Alto-based developer of a digital copyright management service for higher education, said on Thursday it has raised $4 million in its second round of funding, led by Mohr Davidow Ventures. XSeed Capital, Stanford University, Ulu Ventures and angel investors also participated. The company, which spun out of Stanford last September, is the creator of a web-based technology used to offer a range of content options, manage copyrights and deliver digital documents for the higher-education marketplace. Clients include the State University of New York (SUNY) Empire State College and California State University Northridge, in addition to Stanford.

o Milpitas-Based SanDisk Invests in Pebbles Interfaces

Milpitas, Calif. -- SanDisk, the Milpitas-based developer of flash memory storage technology, said on Thursday that its investment arm, SanDisk Ventures, has invested an unspecified amount in Israel-based Pebbles Interfaces. Pebbles makes hardware and software that provides intuitive 3D gesture interaction with computing, communications and consumer electronics devices. SanDisk said the move gives it a foothold into an area that potentially could become the future of human-machine interaction, much like touch screens led to tablet computing. "[It] has the potential to become a key element in how people interact with their digital devices in the future," said Sumit Sadana, SanDisk's executive vice president and chief strategy officer. "We believe that human gestures and human interaction have the potential to unleash exciting new applications and product categories, which in turn, will drive increased demand for flash memory solutions."

o OpenTable Partners with Urbanspoon, Acquires Rezbook System

San Francisco -- OpenTable, the San Francisco-based operator of an online restaurant reservations service, said it has partnered with Seattle-based Urbanspoon and acquired Rezbook, the company's reservation management system for restaurants. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. "We're looking forward to introducing more diners to the convenience of online booking by powering reservations across our more than 20,000 restaurants on the Urbanspoon site and mobile apps," said Matt Roberts, the CEO of OpenTable. "We're also excited about welcoming Rezbook and its approximately 2,000 restaurant customers to the OpenTable family."

o Los Gatos-Based Netflix Launches "Profiles" Feature

Los Gatos, Calif. -- Netflix, the Los Gatos-based subscription video company, on Thursday launched a new feature designed to personalize the viewing recommendations of up to five people on each account. The company said its "Profiles" tool is designed to create a personalized experience based upon each person's watching habits, favorite shows and favorite genres. "No longer will your Netflix suggestions be mixed up with those of your kids, a significant other, roommates or house guests," said Neil Hunt, the company's chief product officer. Profiles began rolling out on Thursday, and will be available to all members within two weeks. Each profile can be connected to a different Facebook account.

o EverFi Deploys National Sexual Assault Prevention Program

Washington, DC -- EverFi, a developer of education technology focused on life skills such as financial literacy, cyberbullying and alcohol abuse, said on Thursday that it has deployed a national sexual assault prevention program. The Washington, DC-based company said that its program, known as "Haven -- Understanding Sexual Assault," will be used at more than 180 college campuses this academic year, certifying over 300,000 students on a mandatory basis. The program, which immediately becomes one of the largest online courses in the nation, will help schools meet new federal requirements outlined by the Department of Education and the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act (Campus SaVE Act).

Mountain View-based Alexza Pharmaceuticals, a developer of inhaled drugs designed to treat of central nervous system conditions, said on Thursday it has promoted Kelly Seither to the newly created position of vice president of global strategic marketing and new product planning, and Tatjana Naranda to the newly created position of vice president of business development and global alliance management. Seither and Naranda joined the company in 2003 and 2005, respectively.

San Jose-based Ultratech, a supplier of lithography, laser-processing and inspection systems used to manufacture semiconductors and LEDs, said it has moved its Ultratech/Cambridge NanoTech operation to a new facility in Massachusetts. Ultratech said it invested in the new facility to bolster the development of atomic layer deposition (ALD) equipment after acquiring the assets of Cambridge NanoTech in December.
