o San Jose-Based Cisco to Cut 4,000 Jobs; 5% of Global Workforce

San Jose, Calif. -- Shares of San Jose-based Cisco Systems plunged more than 7% in Thursday's trading after the networking equipment giant announced plans to cut 4,000 jobs, or 5% of its global workforce. The company, which now has announced more than 12,000 layoffs in the past two years, said it is "rebalancing its resources" in the face of slowing growth. "We’ve got to take out middle-level management," said John Chambers, the company's chairman and CEO. "What I'm really after is not speed of decisions but speed of implementation." The moves come despite revenue and net income in the fiscal fourth quarter that exceeded analyst expectations.

San Francisco -- Apsalar, the San Francisco-based developer of a mobile advertising and analytics platform, said on Thursday it has raised $9 million in its second round of funding, led by DCM. Correlation Ventures and previous backers Thomvest Ventures and DN Capital also participated. The company said it will use the funds to increase head count across all departments, as well as expand its technology development, marketing and sales activities. Apsalar's platform is designed to help users buy mobile ads for their apps across over 70 networks and real-time bidding exchanges.

o San Francisco-Based Swiftype Lands $1.7 Million in Seed Funding

San Francisco -- Swiftype, a San Francisco-based developer of hosted site search tools for online businesses, said on Thursday it has raised $1.7 million in a round of seed funding. Investors included Andreesen-Horowitz Seed, NEA, Kleiner Perkins and Ignition, as well as several angels. The company, founded by Quinlan Hoxie and Matt Riley last year at Y Combinator, said its site search platform delivers analytics that web businesses can use to increase conversions, boost sales and drive return visits. More than 70,000 websites currently use the service.

o The Washington Post Website Hacked Thursday Morning

Washington, DC -- The Washington Post said that its website, washingtonpost.com, was briefly hacked on Thursday morning, with readers of certain stories being redirected to the site of the Syrian Electronic Army. The incident lasted for about 30 minutes. "A few days ago, the Syrian Electronic Army, allegedly, subjected Post newsroom employees to a sophisticated phishing attack to gain password information," wrote Emilio Garcia-Ruiz, the Post's managing editor. "The attack resulted in one staff writer's personal Twitter account being used to send out a Syrian Electronic Army message." The group, a hacker collective that supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, claimed in a Tweet on Thursday that it gained access to the site by hacking one of the Post's business partners, Outbrain. "We have taken defensive measures and removed the offending module," Garcia-Ruiz posted at 12:52 p.m. "At this time, we believe there are no other issues affecting The Post site." The news comes a day after The New York Times' website went down for more than two hours, also the apparent victim of a cyber attack, according to Fox Business.

o Survey: Overseas Expansion Becoming a Top Priority for U.S. Businesses

Boston -- With growth in the U.S. still sluggish, American businesses are more frequently pursuing international expansion to drive sales and win new customers, according to a new survey of senior executives by CFO Research and High Street Partners. Sixty-five percent of respondents said their companies have more aggressive growth targets for international revenue this year then compared to 2012, with 95% expecting to have customers in at least two foreign countries by 2016. All told, two-thirds of the 161 executives surveyed expect international markets to be among their company's top priorities over the next three years. "Given the sluggish pace of U.S. economic growth, these small-and-mid-sized companies are clearly looking to diversify their mix of customers," said Josh Hyatt, associate director of CFO Research. "And they want to establish themselves in those markets where they can do it quickly, and with potentially less risk."
