Palo Alto, Calif. -- Slice, a Palo Alto-based developer of apps designed to help users by drawing from information buried in their inboxes, said it has raised $23 million in a new round of funding, led by Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten. Russia Partners and NPD Group also participated, along with previous backers DCM, Innovation Endeavors and Lightspeed Venture Partners. The company's flagship app, launched in 2011, is designed to help consumers better manage their online purchases, organize receipts, track shipping and take advantage of price changes, It's latest product, called Slice Bookshelf, is designed to help users share and discover books with friends.

o Mountain View-Based HyTrust Lands $18.5 Million in Third Round

Mountain View, Calif. -- HyTrust, a Mountain View-based developer of cloud security tools for virtual infrastructure, said on Monday it has raised $18.5 million in its third round of funding. New investors Intel Capital and Fortinet and previous backers Granite Ventures, Cisco, Trident Capital and Epic Ventures took part in the round, which also included recent investments from In-Q-Tel and VMware. The company said it will use the latest funds to bolster sales and marketing activities, as well as to continue developing its cloud security platform.

o Uber Lands Major Funding Round, Led by Google Ventures

San Francisco -- Looking to ramp up its expansion plans, San Francisco-based on-demand car service Uber late last week raised $258 million in a major new round of funding led by Google Ventures. TPG Capital also participated in the round, which the company said it will use to launch in new markets, hire more drivers and fight regulatory battles as it expands into Europe and Asia. "Our vision is to build a technology company that changes transportation and logistics in urban centers around the world, and this financing gives us the fuel to make that a reality," the company said in a statement. David Drummond, Google's senior vice president of corporate development and chief legal officer, will join the company's board, along with David Bonderman, a founding partner of TPG. The company said it see Google as a valuable technology partner, citing products ranging from Google Maps to Android to self-driving vehicles.

o Sunnyvale-Based RealScout Lands $1.1 Million in Seed Funding

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- RealScout, a Sunnyvale-based developer of real estate technology, said it has raised $1.1 million in new seed funding from DCM's mobile-focused A-Fund, Formation 8 and angel investor Ken DeLeon. RealScout's web and mobile platform is designed to help Realtors better collaborate with clients in searching for homes. The platform includes a search portal for home buyers, as well as natural language email marketing software and a lightweight CRM tool for Realtors. The company currently services real estate agents in the Bay Area, and plans to use the financing to expand further within California and eventually throughout the U.S.

o Telecom Carriers Accept $386 Million to Build Out Broadband

Washington, DC -- Several large and midsized telecom carriers have announced plans to accept $386 million in subsidies from the Connect America Fund to build out broadband infrastructure in underserved areas, broadband trade association USTelecom announced. Among the telecoms taking part in the program will be Windstream, which committed to $123.9 million; AT&T ($100 million); CenturyLink ($54 million); FairPoint ($3.3 million(; Hawaiian Telcom ($1 million) and ACS ($173,800). The investment is expected to extend broadband to 600,000 new homes and small businesses, according to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). "The carriers making these investments serve over 80% of the 18 million Americans with no access to broadband service," said Walter McCormick, the president of USTelecom.
