o San Francisco-Based Lithium Raises $50M in Prelude to Possible IPO

San Francisco -- Looking ahead to a possible initial public offering (IPO), San Francisco-based Lithium Technologies, a developer of software that lets businesses create their own social networks and online communities, said on Wednesday it has raised $50 million in what it calls a "pre-IPO mezzanine" round. Previous backer New Enterprise Associates (NEA) led a syndicate of institutional investors taking part in the round, which the company will use to bolster its technology platform, expand globally and potentially make acquisitions. "We can grow aggressively without distraction while we consider the right timing for a public market offering," said CEO Rob Tarkoff. Lithium also named former Yahoo executive Tapan Bhat as its senior vice president and chief product officer, and appointed Brooke Seawell, a venture partner at NEA, to its board of directors as audit committee chairman.

o San Francisco-Based Electric Cloud Raises $8 Million in New Funding

San Francisco -- Electric Cloud, a San Francisco-based developer of tools designed to automate and accelerate the software delivery process, said on Tuesday it has raised $8 million in a new round of funding, led by Siemens' Venture Capital. Previous backers US Venture Partners, Mayfield Fund, RRE Ventures and Rembrandt Venture Partners also participated in the round, which the company will use to bolster its engineering, sales and marketing activities. "The latest investment from Siemens and our other investors will ensure Electric Cloud remains at the forefront of the next phase of the DevOps market growth and maturation -- continuous delivery," said CEO Steve Brodie.

o San Mateo-Based Marketo to Hold Follow-On Offering

San Mateo, Calif. -- Three months after raising $90.6 million in its initial public offering (IPO), San Mateo-based Marketo, a developer of software designed for marketing and sales employees, said it now plans to hold a follow-on offering. The offering is expected to consist of 5.3 million shares from current stockholders, as well as about 700,000 from the company, itself. The company's stock priced has increased substantially since it priced nearly 7 million shares at $13 each in May. Shares, trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol "MKTO," stood at $33.86 following Tuesday's trading.

o Derek Bertocci Resigns as CFO of Sunnyvale-Based Accuray

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Accuray, a Sunnyvale-based developer of radiation oncology technology, said on Tuesday that Derek Bertocci has resigned as its senior vice president and CFO. He is expected to remain a consultant. The company has named Gregory Lichtwardt, the former CFO of Conceptus, as its new executive vice president and CFO. "It's been a fulfilling experience, but I feel that after being CFO for almost five years at Accuray and a CFO at various companies for almost 10 years that taking a break in my career and taking time to spend with my family is important," said Bertocci.

o Verizon to Buy Remaining Stake in Verizon Wireless for $130 Billion

New York -- Telecom giant Verizon Communications will pay $130 billion to acquire Vodafone Group's 45% stake in Verizon Wireless, the company announced Monday. The cash and stock deal, expected to close early next year, will give Verizon full control of its wireless business following several years of negotiations. "Over the past 13 years, Verizon Wireless has been a key driver of our business strategy," said Lowell McAdam, the chairman and CEO of Verizon. "These assets position us for the rapidly increasing customer demand for video, machine to machine and big data."
