o Ericsson Completes Deal for Microsoft's Mediaroom Business

Mountain View, Calif. -- Swedish telecom equipment giant Ericsson said on Friday it has completed its acquisition of Microsoft's Mountain View-based Mediaroom business and TV solution. The company first announced plans for the deal in April. Mediaroom, which has more than 400 employees, will be integrated into Ericsson's Business Unit Support Solutions group. The business will be known as Ericsson Mediaroom. Ericsson said the acquisition will bolster its portfolio of IPTV middleware technology. 

o Redwood City-Based Silver Spring Networks Names New CFO

Redwood City, Calif. -- Nearly six months after pricing its initial public offering, Redwood City-based Silver Spring Networks, a provider of smart grid technology to electric utilities, has named Jim Burns as its new executive vice president and CFO. Burns succeeds John Joyce, who will continue as the company's vice chairman. "I look forward to going deeper into the business as we execute on our strategy and business model and expand into new markets," said Joyce. Burns previously spent 24 years at HP, serving in roles including CFO of enterprise business, COO and senior vice president of enterprise services, general manager of PC services and accessories and vice president of investor relations. Silver Spring in March raised $92.9 million in its IPO.

o Foundation Capital Names Former Facebook Executive as Partner

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Foundation Capital, the Menlo Park-based vejture capital firm, on Friday named former Facebook executive Jonathan Ehrlich as a partner. Ehrlich, previously Facebook's director of marketing, will focus on early-stage consumer, mobile and small business oriented startups and technologies. During his time at Facebook, he led the company's consumer and brand marketing efforts. Earlier was the executive vice president of online at Indigo Books & Music, co-founded Utah Street Labs and Mobshop, and was also an EIR at Albright Ventures (now Relay Ventures). 

o NASA Launches Instagram Account to Share Space Images and Video

Washington, DC -- Space agency NASA said on Friday said it is launching an official Instagram profile to share new and historic images and videos with the public. The move compliments NASA's already strong presence on social media, including Twitter, Facebook, Google+, YouTube, Flickr, Foursquare and Reddit. "We're constantly looking to expand our social media portfolio to include tools that will best tell NASA's story of exploration and discovery," said Lauren Worley, NASA's press secretary. "Instagram has a passionate following of users who are hungry for new and exciting photos." The agency said its first posts will highlight the scheduled launch of its Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) at 8:27 p.m. PDT Friday, from Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Va. LADEE is a robotic research mission that will orbit the moon to gather detailed information about the structure and composition of the thin lunar atmosphere and determine whether dust is being lofted into the lunar sky. 

o San Jose Conference to Include VC Pitch Competition

San Jose, Calif. -- Organizers of Creative Convergence Silicon Valley 2013 (C2SV 2013), a three-day conference scheduled for later this month in San Jose, have announced plans for a VC Pitch Competition, which will allow entrepreneurs compete for an opportunity to pitch to Silicon Valley investors. To enter, companies must be less than six months old and still majority owned by their founders. The product or service must still be in development, and funding requirements must be less than $3 million. The winning company will receive a startup package of legal, financial and consulting services.

(Redwood City, Calif.) Redwood City-based Electronic Arts (EA) said on Friday that its newly released Madden NFL 25 sold mire than 1 million units during its first seven days at retail, ending Sept. 2. The company said internal estimates show the title was the top selling game in North America in August. 

(Fremont, Calif.) Fremont-based Digital Power, a maker of power systems for the medical, military, telecom and industrial markets, has named William Hultzman as its vice president of finance. Hultzman most recently served as a finance and business development advisor for STEC USA, a start-up in the industrial automation space.
