Previous backers e.ventures, Runa Capital and MSD Capital also participated, as did Aaron Levie, the founder and CEO of Box. Nginx now has raised $13 million since its inception in 2011. The company will use the latest funding to increase development efforts for both the community and commercial versions of its software, as well as to increase its sales, services and support organizations. The software, designed to boost website performance in the face of increased traffic, is used by clients such as Netflix, Dropbox, Pinterest, Airbnb, WordPress.com, Box, Instagram, GitHub, SoundCloud, Zappos and Yandex. New investor NRG Energy joined previous backers Claremont Creek Ventures, RockPort Capital Partners and Aster Capital in the round, which the company will use to develop new services, bolster its current services and expand its engineering and sales staff. EcoFactor currently works a number of utilities and cable companies to offer demand response and energy efficiency services. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sanjay Poonen, VMware's executive vice president and general manager of end-user computing, said the acquisition will allow his company to "accelerate the delivery of DaaS [desktop-as-a-service]." Founded in 2006, Desktone is the developer of a hosting platform that allows desktops to be delivered as an outsourced subscription service. The Cupertino-based company named Angela Ahrendts, the current CEO of British luxury brand Burberry, to the newly created position of senior vice president of retail and online stores.
