o San Francisco-Based Nginx Lands $10 million in Second Round

San Francisco -- Nginx, a San Francisco-based developer of open source web server software, said on Tuesday it has landed $10 million in its second round of funding, led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Previous backers e.ventures, Runa Capital and MSD Capital also participated, as did Aaron Levie, the founder and CEO of Box. Nginx now has raised $13 million since its inception in 2011. The company will use the latest funding to increase development efforts for both the community and commercial versions of its software, as well as to increase its sales, services and support organizations. The software, designed to boost website performance in the face of increased traffic, is used by clients such as Netflix, Dropbox, Pinterest, Airbnb, WordPress.com, Box, Instagram, GitHub, SoundCloud, Zappos and Yandex. The open source Nginx project began in 2002 and went public in 2004.

o Redwood City-Based EcoFactor Raises $10 Million in Second Round

Redwood City, Calif. -- EcoFactor, a Redwood City-based developer of cloud-based home energy services, said on Tuesday it has raised $10 million in its second round of funding. New investor NRG Energy joined previous backers Claremont Creek Ventures, RockPort Capital Partners and Aster Capital in the round, which the company will use to develop new services, bolster its current services and expand its engineering and sales staff. EcoFactor currently works a number of utilities and cable companies to offer demand response and energy efficiency services. Late last year, NV Energy began mass deployment of the company's services, which are also now part of the Xfinity Home platform by Comcast.

o Palo Alto-Based VMware Acquires Desktone

Palo Alto, Calif. -- VMware, a Palo Alto-based based developer of virtualization and cloud infrastructure technology, said on Tuesday it has acquired Massachusetts-based Desktone, creator of a desktop virtualization platform for delivering Windows desktops and apps as a cloud service. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sanjay Poonen, VMware's executive vice president and general manager of end-user computing, said the acquisition will allow his company to "accelerate the delivery of DaaS [desktop-as-a-service]." Founded in 2006, Desktone is the developer of a hosting platform that allows desktops to be delivered as an outsourced subscription service. The company's investors included Highland Capital Partners, Citrix Systems and SoftBank Capital.

o Apple Hires Burberry CEO to Run Retail and Online Stores

Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple on Tuesday turned to the fashion world to help give a boost to its online and retail stores. The Cupertino-based company named Angela Ahrendts, the current CEO of British luxury brand Burberry, to the newly created position of senior vice president of retail and online stores. She will join Apple in the spring. "She shares our values and our focus on innovation, and she places the same strong emphasis as we do on the customer experience," said CEO Tim Cook. Prior to Burberry, Ahrendts was an executive vice president at Liz Claiborne and the president of Donna Karan International.

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Alminder, the Palo Alto-based developer of a mobile smart calendar, said on Tuesday it has landed $1.5 million in seed funding from Tugboat Ventures and private investors. The company said it will use the new capital to expand the availability of its Mynd Calendar into France, Germany and the Netherlands. Alminder's technology is designed to act as a contextually aware virtual assistant, helping busy people make the best use of their time through an intelligent calendar that learns a user's routine and priorities, and becomes more useful over time. The news comes just days after the company also landed $25,000 in new seed funding from Concur after being named "Best B2C Solution" at The Perfect Trip DevCon 2013 in San Francisco.
