San Jose, Calif. -- Microsemi, an Aliso Viejo-based maker of semiconductor and system products, said on Monday it will acquire San Jose-based Symmetricom, a developer of precise timekeeping technologies, through a cash tender offer worth approximately $230 million. Under the deal, expected to close by year's end, Microsemi will pay $7.18 a share. Symmetricom's technology provides timekeeping in GPS satellites, national time references and national power grids as well as in critical military and civilian networks. o Bay Area Companies Raise Most Quarterly VC Since 2001

New York -- Venture capitalists invested $3.6 billion in Bay Area companies during the third quarter, the highest quarterly total since 2001, according to new figures from the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). The total came despite just 312 venture capital deals during the period -- actually 11 fewer than the previous quarter. The findings are based on data collected by Thomson Reuters. Nationally, venture capitalists invested $7.8 billion in 1,005 deals, up 12% in terms of dollars and 5% in the number of deals compared with the prior quarter. The software industry received the highest level of funding, exceeding the $3 billion mark for the first time in 12 years with $3.6 billion. "More venture capital dollars are going into more software deals than we've seen in the past decade," said Mark McCaffrey, global technology partner and software leader at PwC US. "The continued increase in valuations for innovative and disruptive technologies in software-related companies, coupled with the increase in exit activity, is driving venture capitalists to make more investments in this space."

"Our research predicts a very large market in China for a non-invasive therapy to treat hypertension. This investment will allow Kona to begin navigating the complex clinical, regulatory and intellectual property issues associated with this region." Kona is based in Bellevue, Wash. and Menlo Park.
