o Report: Google Barge in San Francisco Is Movable Upscale Showroom

San Francisco -- A barge owned by Google now floating in the San Francisco Bay is actually an upscale showroom that the company will be able to disassemble and ship to different locations, San Francisco CBS affiliate KPIX reported. The company also owns a nearly identical four-story barge in Portland, Maine. The station, citing multiple unnamed sources, said the Mountain View-based company will use the showrooms, which are topped by party decks, to market high-end items like Google Glass to invited clients. The barges had been rumored to be floating data centers, for which Google owns a patent.

o Pleasanton-Based Ellie Mae to Acquire MortgageCEO

Pleasanton, Calif. -- Ellie Mae, a Pleasanton-based developer of web-based automated software tools to the residential mortgage industry, said it will acquire Massachusetts-based MortgageCEO, a developer of customer relationship management and marketing automation tools for the mortgage industry. Financial terms of the all-cash deal, expected to close by the end of the year, were not disclosed. Ellie Mae said the acquisition will help it automate every aspect of the mortgage process. "Based on our customer feedback, CRM is viewed as a key addition to our product offering and an important tool in helping our clients drive loan volume," said Ellie Mae CEO Sig Anderman. All existing MortgageCEO employees will join Ellie Mae, including Jaret Christopher, its founder and CEO.

o NYT: Tech Giants Bolstering Security After Surveillance Reports

Washington, DC -- Reacting to recent reports about the National Security Agency (NSA) using their data to spy on Internet users, several tech giants are now taking measures to better protect their systems, as well as their reputations with the public, The New York Times reported. The newspaper said that companies including Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Twitter are now encrypting internal systems, fortifying security keys and meeting with government officials over the practices, which they say were taking place largely without their knowledge. "The companies, some more than others, are taking steps to make sure that surveillance without their consent is difficult," Christopher Soghoian, a senior analyst at the American Civil Liberties Union, told The Times. "But what they can't do is design services that truly keep the government out because of their ad-supported business model, and they're not willing to give up that business model."

o Government Enlists Help of Major Tech Companies to Fix Healthcare.gov

Washington, DC -- Needing to quickly fix what's become a public relations fiasco, the Obama administration has enlisted the help of computer engineers and programmers from tech giants such as Google, Oracle and Red Hat to rescue its health-insurance exchange website, Bloomberg reported. The site, healthcare.gov, has been plagued by numerous outages since its debut on Oct. 1. Government officials last week began touting a "tech surge" to fix underlying software issues. "They are working through the analytics of what happens on the site to prioritize what needs to be fixed," said Julie Bataille, a spokeswoman for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, in a conference call with reporters.

San Jose, Calif. -- Oclaro, a San Jose-based developer of optical communications technology, said on Friday it has completed the $88.6 million sale of its Amplifier and Micro-Optics business to Pennsylvania-based II-VI. Under the terms of the deal, II-VI paid Oclaro $79.6 million in cash at closing, after previously paying the company $5 million for a 30-day option to buy the business in September. The remaining $4 million will be held by II-VI until the end of 2014, to address any post-closing claims.
