o San Francisco-Based creativeLive Lands $21.5 Million in Second Round

San Francisco -- creativeLive, the San Francisco-based developer of a live education platform, said on Thursday it has raised $21.5 million in its second round of funding, led by The Social+Capital Partnership. Previous backer Greylock Partners also participated after leading the company's $7.5 million round last October. Ted Maidenberg, a general partner at The Social+Capital Partnership, will join James Slavet, a partner at Greylock, on the company's board of directors. Founded in 2010, creativeLive offers a social video platform designed to connect students with subject-matter experts in a live, dynamic online classroom. "No one is offering online education that is live, social and, best of all, free," said CEO Mika Salmi.

o Palo Alto-Based Kidaptive Raises $10.1 Million in Second Round

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Kidaptive, a Palo Alto-based education technology startup focused on early learning, said on Thursday it has raised $10.1 million in its second round of funding, led by Formation 8. Menlo Ventures and the Stanford-StartX Fund also participated, as did previous backers including the NewSchools Venture Fund and Prana Studios. The company said it will use the funding to fuel the growth of its curriculum-based learning platform for the early education market. Kidaptive plans to develop 25 animated appisodes for its "Leo’s Pad: Preschool Kids Learning Series for iPad." The interactive animated stories are embedded with assessments spanning seven learning categories related to cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. "Kids are increasingly spending more minutes on screen time each day, but parents don't yet have a great readout on what they're learning from these activities or even what's capturing their imagination," said P.J. Gunsagar, the co-founder and CEO of Kidaptive. "We can do so much more with tablet time for our kids than use it as a digital babysitter."

o Lockheed Martin to Close Four Buildings on Sunnyvale Campus

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Defense technology giant Lockheed Martin said on Thursday it plans to close four buildings on its Sunnyvale campus by mid-2015, part of a larger plan to cut 4,000 jobs in response to continued declines in federal spending. "In the face of government budget cuts and an increasingly complex global security landscape, these actions are necessary for the future of our business," said Marillyn Hewson, Lockheed Martin's president and CEO. The Maryland-based company also plans to shutter its operations in Newtown, Pa.; Akron, Ohio; Goodyear, Ariz.; and Horizon City, Texas, as well as cut about 2,000 jobs at its Information Systems & Global Solutions (IS&GS), Mission System and Training (MST) and Space Systems businesses. Some of the employees will transfer to other Lockheed facilities. Since 2008, the company has reduced its workforce from 146,000 employees to 116,000.

o CrowdSource Acquires San Francisco-Based Servio

San Francisco -- CrowdSource, an Illinois-based provider of managed crowdsourcing technology, said on Thursday it will acquire San Francisco-based counterpart Servio. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The company said the acquisition will strengthen its client portfolio, expand its workforce and augment its current service offerings. It also will allow CrowdSource to expand its business with large online retailers. Servio's client include retailers such as Overstock, Staples and Toys"R"Us, as well as online publishers like Orbitz and CBS/CNET. "While we both provide offerings around ecommerce content, Servio created a scalable solution to help retailers add additional product attributes, making their products more discoverable to search engines," said CrowdSource co-founder and CEO Stephanie Leffler. The acquisition is expected to close before the end of the month. CrowdSource said it will retain the Servio team and maintain an office in San Francisco.
