Previous backer Mohr Davidow Ventures (MDV) also participated in the round, which the company will use to accelerate product development activities and expand its sales and marketing team in preparation for its upcoming public beta launch. Splice Machine said its database can power real-time operational and analytical applications. The company received its first round of funding from MDV in late 2012, and has since tripled its staff and engaged with more than 10 charter customers. http://www.splicemachine.com http://www.splicemachine.com/splice-machine-raises-15m-series-b-to-power-real-time-big-data-applications/ http://www.splicemachine.com/this-just-insplice-machine-raises-15m-series-b/ _____________________________________________ o AOL Restores Retirement Benefits Following Outcry New York -- The CEO of AOL has apologized for citing the healthcare costs of employees' "distressed babies" for a change in the company's 401(k) policy, and restored the company's previous retirement benefits. "I made a mistake and I apologize for my comments last week at the town hall when I mentioned specific healthcare examples in trying to explain our decision making process around our employee benefit programs," Tim Armstrong wrote in a note to employees, published by Business Insider. Many of AOL's employees reacted angrily when, in a conference call last Thursday, Armstrong said the company had decided to change the way it matched 401(k) contributions, citing rising healthcare costs related to Obamacare and payments of $1 million each to two employees with "distressed" babies. The mother of one of those babies, whose husband works for AOL, answered in an article she wrote for Slate.com Sunday. "I take issue with how he reduced my daughter to a `distressed baby' who cost the company too much money," Deanna Fei wrote. "How he blamed the saving of her life for his decision to scale back employee benefits. How he exposed the most searing experience of our lives, one that my husband and I still struggle to discuss with anyone but each other, for no other purpose than an absurd justification for corporate cost-cutting." http://www.businessinsider.com/aol-restores-the-401k-plans-for-employees-2014-2 (Note to employees) http://www.slate.com/articles/double_x/doublex/2014/02/tim_armstrong_blames _distressed_babies_for_aol_benefit_cuts_he_s_talking.html (Mother's reply) _____________________________________________ o Facebook Co-Founder and Wife Top "Philanthropy 50" List of Top Donors Menlo Park, Calif. -- Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan gave more to charity than anyone else in the U.S. last year, according to a new list compiled by the Chronicle of Philanthropy. The couple topped the publication's annual Philanthropy 50 by reportedly donating $992.2 million to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation in San Mateo. It marks the first time that anyone under the age of 30 has topped the list. They beat out Texas energy tycoon George Mitchell, who left an estimated $750 million to his family foundation when he died in July, and Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penelope, who gave $500 million for cancer research at the Oregon Health & Science University Foundation. All of the company's previous backers, including SEP, Intel Capital, VentureTech Alliance, Braemar Energy Ventures and Semtech, took part in the round, which the company will use for expansion. "This investment will be used to further fuel our growth as digital power continues its rapid market ascendency and also accelerate our product pipeline of advanced digital power solutions," said CEO Mike McAuliffe. http://www.powervation.com http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20140210006042/en/Powervation-Closes-5.5M-Funding#.Uvk1JGJdXng _____________________________________________ o Microchip Technology to Acquire Sunnyvale-Based Supertex Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Microchip Technology, an Arizona-based developer of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP products, said on Monday it will acquire Sunnyvale-based Supertex in a deal valued at $394 million. Under the deal, expected to close by midyear, Microchip will pay $33 a share in cash. Supertex manufactures mixed signal semiconductors, focused on high voltage analog and mixed signal products for use in the medical, LED lighting, display, industrial and telecom industries.
