o Shares of Coupons.com Spike 88% Following $168 Million IPO

Mountain View, Calif. -- Shares of Mountain View-based Coupons.com soared 88% in their market debut Friday after the provider of digital couponing services raised $168 million in its initial public offering (IPO). The company priced 10.5 million shares at $16 each, up from initial estimates of $12-$14. The stock, now trading under the symbol "COUP" on the New York Stock Exchange, closed at $30.01. Coupons.com initially filed for an IPO on Jan. 31. More than 2,000 brands use the company's digital promotion platform, which last year distributed 315 billion coupons.

o Comcast Acquires San Mateo-Based FreeWheel Media

San Mateo, Calif. -- Cable giant Comcast said it has acquired San Mateo-based FreeWheel Media in a deal reportedly worth $360 million. Founded in 2007, FreeWheel is the developer of a technology platform designed to help television broadcasters better manage advertising across a range of devices. "Comcast's investment in our business and our future innovations will accelerate our ability to deliver on our vision," wrote co-founders Doug Knopper, Jon Heller and Diane Yu in a blog post. The three have signed multi-year deals to continue running the business. FreeWheel's backers include Steamboat Ventures, Turner Broadcasting System, DIRECTV, Battery Ventures and Foundation Capital.

o Redwood City-Based Paxata Lands Investment from In-Q-Tel

Redwood City, Calif. -- Paxata, the Redwood City-based developer of a platform designed to let business analysts connect and combine their data, said on Friday it has landed a new investment from In-Q-Tel, the Virginia-based investment firm backed by the CIA. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. In-Q-Tel said the move is part of a larger partnership that will give intelligence clients more rapidly transform raw data into ready data for analytics. "Paxata's technology enables users to break through the data preparation bottlenecks that have prolonged the analytic processes for decades," said T.J. Rylander, a partner at In-Q-Tel.

o Milpitas-Based FireEye Prices $1.1 Billion Follow-On Offering

Milpitas, Calif. -- FireEye, a Milpitas-based developer of virtual machine technology designed to protect users from cyber threats in real time, said it has priced a new $1.1 billion follow-on public offering. The deal includes 14 million shares at $82 each. The company, itself, is selling 5.6 million of the shares -- worth approximately $458 million -- with current shareholders selling the remainder. The offering comes less then three months after FireEye, which went public in September, acquired Virginia-based Mandiant in a deal valued at the time at $1.3 billion.

o Santa Clara's BackWeb Technologies to Cease Operations, Liquidate

Santa Clara, Calif. -- BackWeb Technologies, a developer of communications technologies with dual headquarters in Santa Clara and Israel, said shareholders have voted to cease operations and liquidate the company. Yoav Kfir has been appointed as luqidator, returning all remaining cash, after expenses, to shareholders. A voluntary liquidation process in Israel can typically take 6-12 months. "We thank BackWeb's shareholders for their confidence in the Company and management throughout the years," said acting CEO, Bill Heye. "The liquidator will now take the appropriate steps to complete the process and make the liquidating distributions in a timely manner."
