o Report: YouTube to Pay More Than $1 Billion to Acquire Twitch

San Bruno, Calif. -- YouTube, the San Bruno-based video sharing unit of Google, will pay more than $1 billion to acquire San Francisco-based Twitch, developer of a video platform and online community for gamers, Variety reported. The acquisition, which has yet to be officially confirmed, would be the largest in YouTube's history. Twitch lets users upload and watch free, live gameplay videos that can be streamed from Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 consoles. The company, which claims more than 45 million monthly users, also sells a premium version of its service without ads, and distributes shows from partners including GameSpot, Joystiq and Destructoid. Twitch in September raised $20 million in its third round of funding, led by Thrive Capital.

o Sunnyvale-Based Proofpoint Acquires Mountain View-Based NetCitadel

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Proofpoint, a Sunnyvale-based provider of cloud-based security services, said on Tuesday it has paid approximately $24 million in cash to acquire Mountain View-based NetCitadel, a developer of automated security incident response tools. Proofpoint said the acquisition will bolster its existing security technology. NetCitadel's platform confirms and prioritizes potential security incidents by unifying, correlating and synthesizing security alerts from Proofpoint and other security vendors such as HP ArcSight, Palo Alto Networks and FireEye. Impacted systems can then be automatically quarantined and further communications to malicious sites can be blocked. "This technology is a natural complement to our cloud-based offerings and allows us to deliver a comprehensive advanced threat solution to all organizations, regardless of their existing IT security infrastructure," said Gary Steele, the CEO of Proofpoint.
