o Report: Sunnyvale-Based Yahoo Bids $250 Million for Fullscreen

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Looking to expand its reach to young consumers, Sunnyvale-based Yahoo has bid around $250 million to acquire Los Angeles-based Fullscreen, a media group that creates content for thousands of YouTube channels, Sky News reported. Other potential bidders could be investment firm The Chernin Group, AOL and Comcast, though the latter two are seen as less likely. Fullscreen said its network draws 365 million monthly subscribers who generate 3 billion video views.

o Menlo Park-Based SRI Spins Off Consumer AI Technology Firm Kasisto

Menlo Park, Calif. -- SRI International, a nonprofit research and innovation organization based in Menlo Park, said it has launched a new artificial intelligence spin-off called Kasisto, which aims to improve the consumer experience on mobile devices through intelligent conversation. SRI, which also spun off Apple's Siri, said the new technology will allow companies to integrate branded conversational virtual personal assistants into their mobile apps. "Now consumers expect a more human-like experience when interacting online," said Norman Winarsky, the vice president of SRI Ventures. "Kasisto represents a new user experience -- one that is context aware, personalized and more effective." Kasisto's initial customers are in the financial services industry.

San Francisco -- Pythian, a Canadian provider of data management consulting services, said it has acquired San Francisco-based Blackbird.io, a DevOps and data services provider formerly known as PalominoDB and DriveDev. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Pythian said the acquisition will help it fill increased demand for agile development, operations and technology delivered as a service. "As adoption of SaaS increases, a rapidly growing proportion of the demand for the world's leading data and infrastructure expertise becomes embedded in a DevOps delivery model," said Pythian.CEO Andrew Waitman. "The acquisition of Blackbird.io is key to our long-term strategy to aid the growing service-based markets." Blackbird.io's San Francisco office will become Pythian's first West Coast location, with CEO Laine Campbell leading the company's open-source database group.

o San Francisco-Based UrbanSitter Lands New $200,000 Investment

San Francisco -- UrbanSitter, the San Francisco-based developer of an online and mobile service designed to connect parents and babysitters through mutual acquaintances, said it has landed a new $200,000 investment from Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary's A-Grade Investments. The news comes four months after the company raised $15 million in its second round of funding, led by DBL Investors. It now has raised nearly $23 million since its inception two years ago. UrbanSitter's platform shows parents and sitters how they are connected through Facebook contacts. Sitters post profile pages with information such as availability and hourly rates, and parents can view their reviews, certifications and experience. The site also allows users to book and pay for services.
