o Amazon.com to Acquire San Francisco-Based Twitch for $970 Million

San Francisco -- Amazon.com said on Tuesday it has struck a deal to acquire San Francisco-based Twitch, developer of a video platform and community for gamers, for approximately $970 million in cash, after the company's serious acquisition talks with Google fell through. The deal is expected to close by the end of this year. Twitch launched in 2011 to focus exclusively on live video for gamers. In July, more than 55 million unique visitors viewed more than 15 billion minutes of content on the site. "Broadcasting and watching gameplay is a global phenomenon and Twitch has built a platform that brings together tens of millions of people who watch billions of minutes of games each month," said Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon.com. "We look forward to learning from them and helping them move even faster to build new services for the gaming community." Twitch has raised about $35 million from investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, Alsop Louie Partners, WestSummit Capital, Take-Two Interactive Software, Thrive Capital and Draper Associates. Google had seemed primed to acquire the company for about $1 billion late last month.
