San Jose, Calif. -- Atmel, a San Jose-based developer of microcontroller and touch technology, said it has completed its acquisition of Lake Forest-based Newport Media Inc. (NMI), a maker of low power Wi-Fi and Bluetooth products used to power the "Internet of Things." Under the deal, first announced last month, Atmel made an initial payment of $140 million in cash, and could pay up to $30 million more in potential earn-outs. The report examined 121 apps used by consumers to comparison shop, collect and redeem deals and discounts, and pay in-store with their mobile devices. The findings followed a 2012 FTC workshop that raised concerns about consumers' potential financial liability -- as well as the privacy and security of their data -- when using mobile payment services. "Consumers should not be left in the dark about their potential liability for erroneous or unauthorized charges or about the way shopping apps handle their data," said Jessica Rich, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection.
