o San Francisco-Based Skillz Raises $6 Million in Venture Debt and Equity

San Francisco -- Skillz, the San Francisco-based developer of a mobile e-sports competition platform, said on Friday it has raised $6 million in a new round of funding in a mix of venture debt and equity. Atlas Venture led the round, which the company will use to launch a multi-million dollar user acquisition program, designed to help developers attract new players to their games. Andrew Paradise, the founder and CEO of Skillz, said the funding "brings our industry one step closer to the inevitable future of a tournament system in every mobile game." Skillz currently pays out more than $10,000 daily in tournament prizes and operates more than 50,000 competitions a day across hundreds of mobile titles.

o Mountain View-Based Symantec Names Michael Brown as CEO

Mountain View, Calif. -- Symantec, the Mountain View-based Internet security giant, has named Michael Brown as its new CEO, after he had served as the company's interim president and CEO since March. He had taken over following the firing of former CEO Steve Bennett. The company said it had explored more than 100 qualified candidates before settling on Brown, the former chairman and CEO of Quantum who joined Symantec's board following its merger with Veritas Software in 2005. "The board ran a robust and diligent global CEO search over the last six months, during which we received interest from world-class candidates, including current and former CEOs and technology leaders from successful public companies," said David Mahoney, head of the board's CEO search committee. "Mike went through this same rigorous process and distinguished himself among the candidates."

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Y Combinator company said the investment will generate new market opportunities for its in-memory distributed database with government customers. The technology is designed to let clients, such as Comcast, Ziff Davis, Shutterstock and Zynga, to quickly capture, store and query hundreds of terabytes of data. Eric Frenkiel, the co-founder and CEO of MemSQL, said In-Q-Tel's investment "reflects the deep interest in big data analytics that we're seeing among several industries, including federal."

o FAA Approves Use of Drones on Movie Sets in "Milestone" Ruling

Washington, DC -- The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Thursday took a major step toward allowing the commercial use of drones, permitting the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) on movie and TV sets. The agency granted regulatory exemptions to six aerial photo and video production companies. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx called the decision "a significant milestone in broadening commercial UAS use while ensuring we maintain our world-class safety record in all forms of flight." With companies such as Amazon looking to significantly bolster the use of drones, however, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) said it would like to see even further action. "We urge the FAA to expedite an appropriate regulatory framework for this nascent category," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the CEA. "Time is of the essence. As the U.S. remains stuck on the ground developing rules for these robots-on-wings, the rest of the world is moving forward in putting these unmanned aircraft to work in life-altering ways." The CEA expects the global market for consumer drones to approach $300 million by 2018.
