o Morgan Hill-Based Alien Technology Raises $35M, Names CEO
Morgan Hill, Calif. -- Alien Technology, a Morgan Hill-based developer of radio frequency identification (RFID) products and services for the Internet of Things, said it has raised $35 million in a new round of funding, and named Chris Chang as its new CEO. New investor Shanghai Ruizhang Investment and the company's previous backers took part in the round, which Alien will use to accelerate technology development. Chang most recently oversaw Marvell Technology Group’s business strategy, sales and marketing, business development and government relationship for the Greater China region. At Marvell, "We believe that this capital injection makes Alien one of the strongest pure-play RFID companies in the industry," said Chang. Alien provides RFID chips, tags, readers and services.

o San Jose-Based Zenedge Lands $3.5 Million to Emerge from Stealth
San Jose, Calif. -- Zenedge, a San Jose-based developer of web application security platform, said it has emerged from stealth mode after raising $3.5 million in its first round of funding. Investors included entrepreneurs Yehuda Neuberger, Fred Sorkin and Needham & Company Chairman Andrew Malik. Zenedge's subscription-based service, Zenshield, is designed to isolate web applications and protect them from attacks. "We've seen all too recently with the Shellshock bug how web application vulnerabilities are exploited, making it increasingly more complex to mitigate DDoS attacks," said co-founder and CEO Yuri Frayman. "With potentially millions of newly-compromised computers available to cyber terrorists as part of botnets, it is critical for enterprises to protect themselves from these inevitable threats."

o Uber Signs Long-Term Lease to Expand Offices in San Francisco
San Francisco -- Car sharing service Uber Technologies has signed a long-term lease to expand its offices in San Francisco, commercial real estate firm Brookfield Property Partners announced. The company will occupy 77,600 square feet at the 10-story Monadnock Building at 685 Market Street -- in close proximity to its current headquarters. The building, built in 1907, is expected to be move-in ready by the end of this year.

o WSJ: Amazon.com to Open First Retail Location in New York City
New York -- Amazon.com, the Seattle-based online retail giant, plans to open its first-ever retail store, across from the Empire State Building in New York, The Wall Street Journal reported. Citing people familiar with the matter, the publication said the experimental location will serve primarily as a place for customers to pick up online orders, as well as a distribution center for couriers. Select Amazon product, such as Kindle e-readers and Fire smartphones, also eventually could be in the mix. If deemed successful, the location could open the door for Amazon to open other retail stores across the U.S., The Journal reported.

(Kansas City, Mo.) Angel group valuations continued to climb in the second quarter, with median pre-money valuations reaching $3 million, according to a new survey by the Angel Resource Institute (ARI), Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and CB Insights. At the same time, round sizes dropped approximately 40% to $600,000 from the prior quarter when angel groups invested alone, and rose nearly 20% to $2 million when angels co-invested with other types of investors. Internet, healthcare and mobile companies receiving 73.3% of all angel dollars nationwide.
