o San Jose-Based S2C Lands $4.6 Million in Third Round of Funding

San Jose, Calif. -- S2C, a San Jose-based developer of system-on-chip prototyping tools, said on Tuesday it has landed $4.6 million in its third round of funding, co-led by GVT Fund and Industrial Technology Investment Corp (ITIC). The company will use the proceeds to expand its sales and support channels, as well as accelerate research and development activities. Founded in 2003, S2C currently counts more than 200 customers for its rapid prototyping technology, which is designed to help clients develop complex hardware and software systems.

o San Francisco-Based Drop Raises $2 Million in Seed Funding

San Francisco -- Drop, the San Francisco-based developer of an interactive recipe platform that works with a free app and connected kitchen scale to improve the skills of home bakers, said on Tuesday it has raised $2 million in a round of seed funding. Frontline Ventures and Innovation Works co-led the round, which also included participation from PCH, VegasTechFund and WI Harper Group. Drop said it plans to use the funds to build out its engineering, customer support and community teams, while also increasing its marketing activities. The company said it will conclude its current pre-order campaign on Oct. 19 in preparation for its formal launch later this fall. Drop's $99 scale connects to an iPad app via Bluetooth. The scale senses when an ingredient has been added to the bowl, then automatically guides users step-by-step through recipes. The company said it plans to release several more connected kitchen products, as well.

o EMC to Acquire San Francisco-Based Cloudscaling Group

San Francisco -- EMC, the Massachusetts-based data storage and will acquire San Francisco-based cloud computing startup Cloudscaling Group, a developer of cloud infrastructure tools, in a deal valued at less than $50 million, Bloomberg reported. EMC said the acquisition will improve the performance of its storage products through the use of free software tools. Founded in 2006, Cloudscaling has raised more than $10 million from backers including Juniper Networks and Trinity Ventures.

o San Francisco-Based Bechtel to Create New Infrastructure Unit

San Francisco -- Bechtel, the San Francisco-based engineering, construction and project management giant, said it plans to combine its civil and most of its power business units to create a new unit called Bechtel Infrastructure. The new unit, to be among the company's largest, essentially will consolidate its power, civil engineering, aviation and railroad units. "Markets are changing and it's crucial for us to adapt," said CEO Bill Dudley. "The cities and industrial areas of tomorrow increasingly will be designed and built with roads, airports, ports, rail, water systems, communications, and power integrated into an overall plan." Toby Seay, the president of Bechtel's power business, will become president of the infrastructure unit, which will be headquartered in London. Peter Dawson, president of the company's civil business, will become head of corporate services and CFO, succeeding Mike Adams, who will lead new strategic projects.

o IT Workers Cite Lack of Advancement, Crazy Workload as Top Frustrations

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Forty-five percent of information technology workers said being stuck in a job with few opportunities for professional advancement would cause them the most frustration on the job, according to a new survey by Menlo Park-based Robert Half Technology. Having an unmanageable workload (43%) and a limited ability to learn new skills (39%) follow closely behind. At least 30% of the 2,300 respondents also said they would feel frustrated by not feeling empowered to make decisions, not seeing eye-to-eye with their manager, not being acknowledged for good work and unrealistic expectations from customers. "IT workers worry about remaining relevant and marketable, and they look to their employers to help them acquire new skills and advance in their careers," said John Reed, senior executive director at Robert Half Technology. "Often, the ability to learn and grow can be as important as a competitive compensation package."
