o Mountain View-Based Symantec to Split into Two Independent Companies
Mountain View, Calif. -- Symantec, the Mountain View-based Internet security giant, said late Thursday it plans to split into two independent publicly traded companies -- one focused on security and one on information management. The company expects to complete the spinoff by the end of 2015. Michael Brown, the company's current president and CEO, will retain those roles with the new Symantec, with John Gannon becoming general manager of the information management business. Gannon previously served as the president and COO of Quantum, and earlier led HP's commercial PC business. The company said the decision follows an extensive business review of its strategy and operational structure. "It has become clear that winning in both security and information management requires distinct strategies, focused investments and go-to market innovation," said Brown. "Separating Symantec into two, independent publicly traded companies will provide each business the flexibility and focus to drive growth and enhance shareholder value."

o Fremont-Based Spin Transfer Technologies Lands $70 Million
Fremont, Calif. -- Spin Transfer Technologies (STT), a Fremont-based developer of MRAM (Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory) technology, said on Thursday it has raised $70 million in a new round of funding to accelerate commercial development. Woodford Investment Management led the round, which also included participation from previous backer Invesco Asset Management, which remains the company's largest institutional shareholder, as well as SandAire. STT said its OST-MRAM technology has the potential to replace large segments of the Flash, SRAM and DRAM markets, which collectively had a combined estimated value of $60 billion in 2013. Barry Hoberman, STT's CEO, said the funding "[puts] us in an excellent position to significantly impact the sizeable market segments that the company aims to serve."

Mountain View, Calif. -- Ranovus, a Canadian developer of interconnect tools with U.S. operations in Mountain View, said on Thursday it has raised $24 million in a new round of funding. The two-year-old company said all of its previous backers took part in the round, including Azure Capital Partners, T-Venture, BDC Venture Capital, OMERS Ventures and MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund, along with unspecified new investors. Hamid Arabzadeh, the company's chairman, president and CEO, said the round "will help accelerate our expansion plan to support product delivery into our global customer base." Ranovus makes high-capacity interconnect products for datacenter and communications networks.

Foster City, Calif. -- Stellar Loyalty, a Foster City-based developer of big data customer loyalty tools, said it has raised $5 million in its first round of funding, led by InterWest Partners. TDF Ventures and Garnett Ventures also participated. The company said it will use the proceeds to accelerate its go-to-market strategy. Stellar Loyalty, co-founded earlier this year by Kevin Nix and Peter Lim, said its cloud-based technology is designed to deliver personalized offers from "meaningful" loyalty programs. Resolute Ventures, Bloomberg Beta, Crosslink Capital and Tekton Ventures took part in the round. "The added capital will allow us to continue investing in our predictive intelligence technology and help us expand our sales and marketing efforts," said co-founder and CEO Nadim Hossain. BrightFunnel's platform, which includes multi-touch attribution, intelligent forecasting and industry benchmarking, is currently used by clients such as HootSuite, Nimble Storage and ServiceMax.
