San Francisco -- BluWrap, a San Francisco-based developer of technology designed to extend the shelf life of fresh proteins, said on Wednesday it has raised $12.6 million in a new round of funding, led by Wheatsheaf Investments, part of the Grosvenor Estate. Previous backers Anterra Capital, Firelake Capital and Rabo Ventures also participated in the round, which the company will use to accelerate adoption of its technology, secure new sources of protein supply, expand geographically and further develop its capabilities in other species of seafood and pork. BluWrap's technology uses oxygen management techniques to maintain an all-natural controlled atmosphere environment that extends the shelf life of perishable proteins, such as fish.

o Hayward-Based C3Nano Raises $12 Million in Third Round
Hayward, Calif. -- C3Nano, the Hayward-based developer of a nanomaterial-based transparent conductive material used in consumer electronics products, said on Wednesday it has landed $12 million in its third round of funding, co-led by Nagase America and an undisclosed large-cap global industrial company. Previous backers GSR Ventures and Phoenix Ventures Partners (PVP) also contributed, as well as private investment group Hongguo International. The company plans to use the new funding to expand its manufacturing capacity and organization, as well as to bolster R&D activities. Founded in 2010 as a spinout from Prof. Zhenan Bao's chemical engineering laboratory at Stanford University, C3Nano is the developer of coatable transparent conductive material Active-grid.

o Unique Solutions Design Hires Silicon Valley-Based CEO
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia -- Unique Solutions Design, a developer of body scanning technology designed to accurately reflect the real size and shape of apparel consumers, on Wednesday named Tuoc Luong as its new CEO, based in Silicon Valley. He succeeds founder Tanya Shaw, who has become executive chairwoman. The company said the move is part of its plan to build out its Silicon Valley operations, and launch an aggressive online apparel sizing-matching campaign this winter. Luong most recently served as the CEO of Shanda Online, and previously was global senior vice president at Yahoo. Earlier this year, Unique Solutions Design launched an online "Predictive Model" for apparel shoppers that allows them to input key measurements and shop with greater accuracy online.

o BET Founder Launches Urban-Themed Streaming Movie Service
Silver Spring, Md. -- RLJ Entertainment, the Maryland-based media company created by BET founder Robert Johnson, said on Wednesday it has launched a new subscription streaming video service focused on urban-themed movies. The service, known as Urban Movie Channel (UMC), will showcase dramas, documentaries, comedies, horror movies and stage plays aimed at African-American audiences. "UMC was designed so that the African-American and urban creative community could directly reach consumers in a way that removes many of the restrictions associated with the legacy content development and distribution models," said Johnson. "As more video is consumed over broadband, we believe that we can quickly become the preeminent provider of quality urban entertainment to what has largely been an underserved, yet highly engaged audience." UMC will launch with a free trial period through Feb. 4, then cost $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year.

o Global Semiconductor Industry Posts Highest-Ever Quarterly Sales
Washington, DC -- The global semiconductor industry posted its highest-ever quarterly sales during the third quarter, according to new figures from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). Worldwide sales of semiconductors reached $87 billion during the period, up 5.7% from the prior quarter and 8% from the same period in 2013. "Global semiconductor sales remain strong and well ahead of last year's pace," said Brian Toohey, president and CEO of the SIA. "The industry has now posted seven consecutive months of sequential monthly growth, and year-to-year growth has been strong across nearly all semiconductor product categories, with DRAM and analog leading the way."
