San Francisco -- Shares of San Francisco-based Lending Club surged more than 50% by midday Thursday in their market debut, hours after the developer of an online marketplace connecting borrowers and investors priced its initial public offering (IPO) above expectations. The company is selling 50.3 million shares -- and current stockholders another 7.7 million shares -- at $15 each, above the company's previous guidance of $12-$14. The IPO is expected to generate $754.5 million for the company. Shares began trading Thursday morning under the symbol "LC" on the New York Stock Exchange. Lending Club's platform has facilitated more than $5 billion in loans since it first launched in 2007.

o American Express Opens Technology Hub in Palo Alto

Palo Alto, Calif. -- American Express on Thursday announced the opening of a new technology hub in Palo Alto, where the company will focus on innovations in big data, cloud computing and mobile infrastructure. Chief Technology Officer Nik Sathe, who previously served in executive roles at Google and PayPal, overseeing the development of digital payments capabilities and platforms, will be senior executive at the hub. Over time, American Express expects to employ approximately 200 workers at the facility. The new location also houses the American Express Ventures team, which since 2011 has been investing in early stage start-ups in the areas of digital commerce, financial inclusion and core capabilities such as data and analytics, security and servicing. The company's recent technology innovations include an American Express card availability on Apple Pay, and the capability for eligible U.S. card members enrolled in its Membership Rewards program to redeem points in select McDonald's restaurants, through the Uber app and in certain New York City taxi cabs.

o San Francisco-Based AppGyver Acquires AppArchitect

San Francisco -- AppGyver, a San Francisco-based creator of tools for rapid mobile app development, said it has acquired AppArchitect, developer of a drag-and-drop platform for creating mobile apps. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Ilya Zatulovskiy, the co-founder and CEO of AppArchitect, will join AppGyver as an advisor. Concurrent with the acquisition, AppGyver said it has released an early preview of the upcoming AppArchitect 2.0, which will bring support for Android and a host of new features suggested by the AppArchitect community.

o "Green Monday" Online Sales Surge 15% from a Year Ago

Reston, Va. -- Americans spent $1.6 billion online on Green Monday (Dec. 8), making it the third heaviest online spending day of this holiday season, according to new figures from comScore. The day trailed only Cyber Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 2, with e-commerce sales up 15% from the same day in 2013. For the holiday season-to-date, $35.4 billion has been spent online, up 15% from a year ago. "Though much has been made in the media of the possibility that early retailer promotions might have pulled spending away from the key shopping days such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday, our data show that this did not occur," said Gian Fulgoni, the chairman emeritus of comScore.

o Survey: Business Optimism for 2015 at Pre-Recession High

Bethesda, Md. -- More than half of corporate treasurers and CFOs believe business conditions will improve in 2015, the largest percentage predicting improvement since 2005, according to a survey by the Association for Financial Professionals (AFP). The survey of 856 executives found that 44% of finance executives expect the U.S. economy to grow between 2.0-2.9%, while 31 percent are even more optimistic and expect it to grow between 3.0-3.9%. Among those surveyed, 49% say their companies anticipate hiring workers in 2015, with approximately 1.9 million non-farm jobs expected to be created.
