o Report: Google to Shut Down Engineering Operations in Russia

Mountain View, Calif. -- Responding to restrictive new laws about how tech companies store data in the country, Mountain View-based Google is planning to shut down its engineering operations in Russia, tech publication The Information reported. The issue reportedly stems from new laws requiring foreign tech companies to house data about Russian citizens within Russia, itself. The company plans to offer its roughly 50 engineers working in the country jobs elsewhere, the publication states. Another tech company, Adobe Systems, reportedly also shut down its Russian operations in September.

o Lockheed Martin Opens Satellite Cell Network Facility in Sunnyvale

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Defense technology giant Lockheed Martin said on Friday it has opened a new $6.5 million facility in Sunnyvale as part of an effort to help the U.S. Navy roll out its new satellite cell network for soldiers in the field. The network, known as the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS), is expected to be fully operational next year. Lockheed said its new 3,400-square-foot Test Radio Access Facility (TRAF) will help test, develop and certify MUOS radio terminals and government apps. The goal is to "help terminal developers and application integrators get MUOS' capabilities deployed to the warfighter as quickly as possible," said Glenn Ladue, the company's manager of MUOS TRAF. "Providing a high fidelity, end-to-end test environment during development will dramatically shorten the time it takes to get from a good idea to operational utility." Once MUOS is fully operational, users, connected through the system's Internet Protocol-based technology, will be able to transmit and receive clear voice calls and data from almost anywhere in the world.
