o San Francisco-Based Riverbed to Be Acquired in $3.6 Billion Deal
San Francisco -- Following a two-month review of its financial and strategic business options, San Francisco-based application performance infrastructure company Riverbed Technology said on Monday it will be acquired for approximately $3.6 billion in cash by private equity firm Thoma Bravo and Teachers' Private Capital. Under the deal, which will take the company private, stockholders will receive $21 a share in cash. "Having undertaken a thorough strategic review, during which we assessed a wide variety of options to maximize value, the board unanimously concluded that partnering with Thoma Bravo was the best choice for Riverbed," said Jerry Kennelly, the company's chairman and CEO. Kennelly will remain with the company in the same capacity. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2015.

Palo Alto, Calif. -- SurveyMonkey, the Palo Alto-based developer of an online survey platform, said on Monday it has raised $250 million in equity funding to pursue future mergers or acquisitions. Participants includes new investors T. Rowe Price Associates, Morgan Stanley Investment Management and Baillie Gifford & Co, as well as previous backers Tiger Global Management, CEO Dave Goldberg, ICONIQ Capital, Google Capital, Social+Capital Partnership, Ryan and Chris Finley and Laurel Crown Partners. "We plan to use some of the new capital to pursue potential acquisitions as well as provide meaningful liquidity to our employees and investors who have shared in our growth over the years," said Goldberg. Founded in 1999, SurveyMonkey currently counts more than 20 million customers.

San Jose, Calif. -- SunPower, the San Jose-based developer of solar panels and systems, said on Monday it has invested $20 million in Colorado-based Tendril, developer of a cloud-based software platform designed to deliver personalized energy services. The company also will license Tendril's Energy Services Management (ESM) platform, which it plans to bolster with new smart energy applications aimed at a broader set of consumers and utilities. "Consumers want even more flexibility to tailor their energy supply and usage to fit their lifestyles, beliefs and financial goals," said Tom Werner, SunPower's president and CEO.

San Jose, Calif. -- HGST, the San Jose-based storage technology unit of Western Digital, said on Monday it has acquired San Jose-based Skyera, a developer of solid-state storage systems. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Skyera will be fully integrated into HGST, bolstering the company's existing solid-state storage offerings and expanding its engineering talent. "Flash solutions represent a large, exciting growth area for HGST and uniquely complement our existing portfolio," said Mike Cordano, the president of HGST. Western Digital and Skyera have partnered for several years.

o Report: IT Employment Grows Modestly in November
Alexandria, Va. -- The number of information technology jobs in the U.S. grew by just 0.1% last month to 4.7 million, according to new figures from the TechServe Alliance, a national trade association for the IT and engineering staffing industry. On a year-over-year basis, IT employment has grown by 3.3% since Nov., 2013, with 148,900 workers added. "While the rate of growth in IT employment ebbs and flows month-over-month, we have now had a stretch of 56 consecutive months of posting positive numbers," said Mark Roberts, CEO of the TechServe Alliance. "Based on all the data we see as well as the front-line reports of my member companies, I believe future growth in many IT and engineering skill sets will actually be impeded more by the lack of supply of qualified candidates than by lack of demand."
