o Zillow Completes $2.5 Billion Deal for S.F.-Based Trulia, Eliminates Jobs

San Francisco -- Nearly seven months after first announcing the deal, Seattle-based Zillow, operator of the nation's most visited real estate website, said on Wednesday it has completed its $2.5 billion all-stock acquisition of San Francisco-based challenger Trulia. The combined company will operate under the name Zillow Group, which will serve as the parent to real estate and home-related brands Zillow, Trulia, New York City's real estate marketplace StreetEasy and rental search brand HotPads. In connection with the acquisition, the companies have eliminated approximately 280 positions, primarily in San Francisco and Bellevue, Wash., due primarily to redundancies in sales and administration, and plans to cut another 70 jobs at the end of the second quarter. Zillow Group will be left with approximately 2,000 employees. Paul Levine, previously Trulia's COO, has been named president of Trulia, reporting to Zillow CEO Spencer Rascoff. Pete Flint, the co-founder and former CEO of Trulia, has joined the company's board of directors. The new Zillow Group on Wednesday began trading on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol "Z."

o Mountain View-Based Axcient Raises $25 Million in New Funding

Mountain View, Calif. -- Axcient, a Mountain View-based provider of cloud-based business recovery services, said on Wednesday it has raised $25 million in a new round of funding, led by Industry Ventures. Previous backers Allegis Capital, Peninsula Ventures, Scale Venture Partners and Thomvest Ventures also participated in the round, which the company will use to bolster sales and marketing, nearly double the size of its R&D team and finance its reseller compensation program. In addition, the company raised a significant growth debt facility, which it plans to announce in the coming weeks. Axcient's Business Recovery Cloud is designed to mirror an organization's entire business in the cloud to ensure that IT operations never go down.

o Message Systems Lands $27 Million in New Funding Round

San Francisco -- Message Systems, a San Francisco- and Maryland-based provider of email infrastructure with major operations in San Francisco, said on Wednesday it has landed $27 million in a new round of funding, increasing the company's backing to $65 million since its inception. New investor Hercules Technology Growth Capital joined previous investors LLR Partners and NewSpring Capital in this round. Separately, the company announced an $8 million line of credit for working capital purposes, also from Hercules. The company will use the new capital to help drive adoption of SparkPost, its new public cloud email service, through accelerated development and expanded sales and marketing activities. The news comes just two weeks after Message Systems announced its acquisition of Port25 Solutions, maker of a popular email delivery software product.

o San Francisco's Notey Raises $1.6 Million in Seed Funding

San Francisco -- Notey, the San Francisco- and Hong Kong-based developer of a platform designed to help users find curated blogs on more than 500,000 topics, said it has raised $1.6 million in a new round of seed funding. Investors included Steve Kirsch, the founder of Infoseek, OneID and CoinTrust; Hugo Barra, the vice president of international at Xiaomi; and Ryan Holmes, the founder and CEO of Hootsuite. "What differentiates us from RSS readers and blog directories is that we're focused on the content," said co-founder Catherine Tan. "We've structured the site based on topics, rather than creating a list of bloggers. On top of that, we also curate… We think having that human touch makes all the difference."
